Hello everyone. Finally joined this forum after reading it for some time. I am now the owner of two black vehicles; 2008 Audi Q7 & 2007 Roush Stage 3 Mustang. Having never owned black before I decided I could use a little help in the appearance department. I'm not new to detailing as I have detailed many award winning show cars, but never black. My other cars are a 1966 Thunderbird (cruiser) and a 1988 Thunderbird (racer).

Any tips on making the black look nice with the crappy Chicago winters coming is appreciated.

I can't speak regarding paint correction. But, having one black car and a very dark grey along with Indianapolis winters...I may have some input.

Personally i use two coats of a polymer sealer (with proper cure time for each) and then a top coat of Collinite 845 or 915 wax.

The polymer sealer I use is Poorboy's EX-P Sealant...I have read that Klasse and Powerloc have greater longevity, but Poorboy's can be applied in the sun which is of great benefit when shade is a limited resource.

Black isn't a color, it's a full time job. Seriously, here's the best advice I've ever heard and shared...

"Find something you like and use it often"


You'll find the help you're looking for here but here's a tip... start a "dedicated thread" in a forum like Detailing 101 with a good title that tells people want you want help with and you'll get better replies.

Your thread here states,

Newbie from Chicago


Nobody that reads the title to your intro thread will know you own two black cars and are looking for help in maintaining them. A better thing to do would be to start a new thread with a title like,

Need tips for taking care of two black cars?

Thanks. I was really just looking for some quick tips form members. There is so much information on here, and I'm sure that my question has already been answered, but I haven't gotten around to searching yet. Still dealing with information overload.
