I will be taking the PC plunge. I only work on my own car and the paint is in great shape but want to cut my polishing teeth (so to speak). So, I'm not interested yet in the UDM or Flex.

Should I get the 7424 or another brand (Makita etc) and buy individual pads or maybe get one of the AG kits?

Right now I apply everything by hand with the 4" pads and Polishing Pal.

Thanks in advance. I look forward to starting the process.

I'm not sure I understand your question... The "PC" stands for Porter Cable, which is the brand, the 7424 is the model number. To my knowledge, Makita doesn't make a comparable product.

The PC (7424) is a great tool made by a well known and respected company. Unless you wanted more ability than this traditional DA (Double-Action) polisher, ie a Flex (DA + forced rotation) or a rotary, I can't think of any reason to look for a different brand or model.

The pad kits, and the kits that contain pads and polishes are great ways to get started, don't forget to get a backing plate as well.

Hope that helps.

+1 for PC7424. If you add an additional backing plate (3 1/2" I believe) then you can use the pads that you use with the polishing pal on your PC.
If you don't have your pads or polishes yet then look into kits IMO. The PB kit was a popular one.

Thanks fellas. Yeah I meant the Porter Cable...and I will get a smaller backing plate as well. Looking forward to joining the club.

when i got my PC i went to the closest body shop and got a wrecked hood they had out back for free. set it up on saw horses and figured out what you can and shouldn't do on paint. this has helped me thru the learning curve. its nice to know what you can and can't do on the paint(clear coat)before you start on your own.
