I'm a petrol head with a bad case. But cannot afford to pay people to fix and maintain my babies:
- Jade Mica 1999 4Runner, Highlander, SR5, 5MT, last of the old-school 4WD 4Runners (no locking diff, unfortunately), bone stock.
- Platinum Silver 2002 Subaru WRX, first wave of the recent AWD/Turbo movement in the US, Stage 4, IHI VF30 Turbo, 300 AWHP.
- Apex Silver 2006 Mitsubishi Evolution IX GSR, last of the 4G63 Evos, last CT9A chassis, CBRD BBK Full Turbo, 400 AWHP, Bilstein HD shocks, GTWorx Springs.
They're not collectors items but they're collectible to me, super dependable, super capable and super fun cars to own and drive.
Anyway, I wanted to detail the Evo's engine because I've been going to Katies Cars and Coffee in Great Falls so I looked for the most active detailing forum and ended up here.
Lurked and lurked and read and read. I wanted to do the bare minimum amount of work while still significantly protecting the cars. I settled on defaulting to Meguiar's unless other products had a significant edge.
For engine detailing I decided on the following and a few weeks ago placed my first order:
1 D-10301 - 128 oz. Meguiar's D103 APC Plus
1 GG-2PACK - 2 Qty Grit Guard Inserts
1 WBMF-A7D - 1¼ Inch Wheel Woolies Boar’s Hair Detail Brush
1 VENT-KIT - Clean Vent Kit
I already had 3 5-gallon buckets from home depot and Meguiars ultimate wash and wax from Walmart. The wife (drives the WRX) was super stoked at the results of just a basic clean and interior detail and now I've got the bug to get in the habit of having our cars spotless and protected all the time.
GOAL:
I'm trying to keep it simple, easy, as inexpensive as possible, durable, long-lasting and protective (because I will slack hard over the winter and all cars are parked outside).
After lurking and reading some more here, this is what I came up with for the second order I just placed tonight:
1 B-62526 - 16'' & 11'' Wire Wheel Brushes
1 AF-OB500 - 500 ml. Auto Finesse Oblitarate Tar Remover [THE BEST ACCORDING TO MY READING]
2 X-3002 - Meguiar's Microfiber Wash Mitt
1 GG-1010B - The Grit Guard Insert- Blue [FOR WHEEL BUCKET]
1 GPNB48100 - X Large Black Nitrile Gloves
1 GR-11153 - 8 oz. Griot's Garage Paint Cleaning Clay 19.99 [HIGH QUALITY, GOOD PRICE, MINIMAL MARRING]
1 CP-15 - 500 mL. CarPro Iron X Iron Remover 19.99 [OK, MAYBE THIS IS SPLURGING]
1 303-30340 - 16 oz. 303 Aerospace Protectant 12.99 [THE STANDARD]
1 MO-156200 - Mothers Detail Brush Set 3.99 [SO CHEAP, WILL BE NICE TO HAVE]
1 MO-TWWK3 - Mothers Tire, Wheel & Well Brush Kit
1 MO-155900 - Mothers Interior & Upholstery Brush
1 G-12310 - 10 oz. Meguiar's Plast X Clear Plastic Clean [GOTTA UNSCRATCH MY CLOCK FACE]
1 3M-03431 - 18mmx32m 3M Scotch Premium Automotive Masking Tape [TO USE WITH PLAST X]
1 ULT-7012-120 - 12 oz. Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus 31.99 [EXPENSIVE BUT SUPER LONG LASTING]
1 CO-845 - 16 oz. Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax #845 16.99 [GOOD FOR SLACKERS LIKE ME, SUPER DURABLE AND LONG LASTING]
I already have Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Detailer I'm going to use for clay lubricant, and Gold Class Rich Leather Cleaner & Conditioner and Quik Interior Detailer and Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner (but I'm switching to Mothers Foaming Wheel and Tire Cleaner based on what I've read here and hot rims turning my tires brown).
I'm probably too lazy to document everything I do the way you heavy-duty contributors do, but I plan on taking some pics and putting them up some time after I'm done.
Feel free to let me know what I didn't get right/optimum or can be improved upon.
Thanks very much to everyone who's opinions I read and digested, there are way too many to name but you might know who you are from the choices I've settled on here.
