Hello there,

Im about to try to fix my car paint, because it started to get realy bad. It is nissan altima 2008. There is some paint oxidation, also i was seeing some cats on the top of the car couple of times. i belived that the scraches are from the cats, but not 100% sure. Also i will need some advice gor the headlights too :)

I ordered PORTER-CABLE 7424XP DA polisher, Meguiar's M105 and 205, yellow, white and red foam pads, some 1000 to 2500 sandpaper and Finish Kare 1000P Hi-Temp Paste Wax. Did i ordered the right products? any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Looks like you have a job ahead of you.

But M105 and M205 will handle it.

You will need to wash, and clay before starting the correction steps.

What brand pads did you order?

I would also pick up 2 microfiber cutting pads for the PC. It doesn't have a lot of power but the microfiber pads will help compensate for that.

Also 3000 grit sandpaper would be beneficial to make cutting and polishing the wet sanded area easier. I also wouldn't wet sand without a paint thickness gauge.

I don't think he needs to do any wet sanding... :D

The reason why I didn't even mention the sandpaper.

The MF Cutting pads are a really good idea though, should really speed things for him with that PC. :xyxthumbs:

Thank you for your fast response guys :) I will be using CCS foam pads. The sandpaper is for the headlights, because im not sure i will be able to remove that nasty stuff on the top! How many 2x2 i can polish before i have to clean the pad? i did get only one of each, i may have to get some more. Also how to do the headlights by hand or with power tolls?

Just made couple more pictures:

You will know when but as a general guideline after every 2-3 sections you should inspect the pad for build-up.

I can't get a good look at the headlight but id work them by hand first that should get the job done, Nissans tend to haze on the top edges try the least aggressive approach first and go from there.

The "scratches" in the pictures don't look to me like they would be from cats. They look more like dried out cracking clearcoat from sun and UV exposure.

I was advised to swap 205 with HD polish and use MF cutting pads for 105. If not because of the freaking cats why only the hood and the roof are damage? everywhere else teh paint looks very good, and this is silver paint, dont get very hot summer time!

The hood, roof, and trunk see the most exposure to the sun and its damaging UV rays. The sides probably never see the high noon sun like the top sections do which would explain why the sides are in better condition. Cats generally don't claw at smooth surfaces. They "maintain" their claws on rough surfaces which provides a sharpening effect. There are many variables that could play into your paint problem. Have you checked to see if there are any TSB's for your 08 Altima's paint? Maybe Nissan had some quality control issues for a short run and you got one of them? At this point, I'm not sure the paint on your roof and hood could even be corrected. Hopefully I am wrong!
