no real place to clean my car?

Well here's my suggestion. do something good for your town and become a Volunteer Firefighter. Most fire stations have a wash bay and the members are free to wash theirs cars anytime you want. Mine charges $1. If no one is waiting I can stay in there all day or night. It's warm in the winter. Not only do you have a clean car you are doing something worth while for the community. I've belonged for over 30 years even though I don't fight fires anymore.

Very good suggestion, though it unfortunately doesn't work for everyone. I used to be one in my town, but both the politics that overran the dept, and the fact that I moved to the outskirts between two districts and changed jobs, just left me unable to continue. But while I was there, I did have the ability to use empty bays whenever, plus we had the pool table upstairs. That said though, we were limited to personal cars (and immediate family, as long as we were the ones washing). Ours wouldn't approve if I was using it for a for-profit job. Different places obviously would have different rules.

Right now I don't have the money to spend really on some good stuff. I plan to before winter but i hear ya. It sucks. I'm just glad I have enough time to rewax it when needed

A bottle of Klasse Sealant is $19.99, one of the best buys you can find for a sealant.

Hum...

1. We don't have volonteer firefighters here in Montréal.

2. I am not in physical condition to be a firefighter (arthritis and all that)

3. Putting my life at risk to be able to wash cars for free seems a little extreme ;)

4. Did I mention I already have 2 jobs?

Has anyone in this situation contacted other types of places where we can work? For example a garage (the type that repair cars). I am thinking maybe they would be willing to lease the place during hours they are closed? Or underground parking lots (heated), most of them have water so they can wash the floor and electric outlets.

I will need to find a solution for sure before winter. I phoned around today and all the car wash places in this town are not do it yourself. They do it for you for almost no money : 10$ for hand wash and 15$ for handwash+interior... I am scrared of the work they do for 15$ Inside outside! Ouch! Even if their employe is paid minimum wage, which is 10$ per hour here, they still need to make a profit so I can't see him taking more than 30 minutes to do both Inside and outside... Not even talking about the cost of products here.

I think I will bring them one of the cars from the community service I am part of tomorrow. Cars are all beated so even if they damage something it will not stand out from the rest of the damage users are doing to them. I have to witness this 15$ service for myself ;)

One other option I had considered was one of those storage place (RV or boat) that would have a space big enough for a car/truck, which was dismissed as viable because it is very expensive.

How about drive-throughs at the bank? Actually I was a security guard for Secur and SecPro in Montreal (when I studied at John Abbott and McGill) and I remember seeing a lot of loading docks which may serve the purpose in a pinch. You may want to also check with the concierge at the high end hotels as well, and offer to detail their customer's vehicle onsite?? This may open an untapped resource and offer you a place to take care of your vehicles.

You know, another option is to just pack up your waterless wash material or rinseless wash material and drive to a covered parking lot. Pay the few bucks to get in (or out), find a space with no one around you, and just start cleaning your car. Not sure the owners would have a beef since you are paying to be there. Plus, you might even hand out your cards or put them under some windshield wipers.

Ya that would work for cleaning, I am not so sure about polishing. I am thinking that maybe hand wash car wash car washes might be interested in renting the place during off hours.

That's not a bad idea. Plenty of high end hôtels in downtown montreal.

Suggestion from Junior Member: Although I now have a dedicated workspace for my car maintenance supplies in my garage for the car I have now, for my last car, I did this. Get 3 "milk crates" Hand wash and dry your car at home. Place your "detailing supplies in one crate place your polishing cloths in second crate. In third crate place cloths that will be used for 'dirty" jobs (these cloths will never touch your car's finish) Put all three crates in your trunk. After cleaning and drying, drive to an out of business car wash (there are a few in my area) and do your thing. You'll be in shade, no birds to dive bomb you while your applying your wax- trust me that can make you quite angry. It worked for me......Just a suggestion.......(hope as a Junior Member I'm not overstepping my boundaries)...Where there's a will there's a way.

Keep it Clean
Stay Well
