Number of pads and types

Clearly you have your own preference (5 inchers). He should order both sizes and make his own decision. This really turned into a pissing contest for some reason? I was simply stating the same as you, my opinion.

No pissing contest over here, just stating a simple fact. Once again if you enjoy using the 6.5 great, it is not about my preference it is about what will work the best with the pc. I also use the 5 inch pads on my rotary, the Kompressor pads, 9 inch wool pads.

I would love to see this fantastic "cut-o-meter" that will show this dramatic cut difference between 1 more inch of pad diameter, but I have a feeling it doesn't exist.

:Picture:
Use a 6.5" pad on a pc and put 10lbs. of pressure on the head and the pad will stop spinning. I want a dual action polisher not a sander.

Again, 5 inchers are your preference. There is no scientific data that you can prove the cut is better with 5 inch pads or if the PC works better with the 5 inch pads.

Doubleteaming me doesnt prove your claims.

I simply stated my opinion and you say they are wrong and that you have the facts. I then say that I would love for you to back up your claim and you then keep telling me I'm wrong. Please tell me how you know so well that these smaller pads do, in fact, cut better than the 6.5 inchers, or is that your OPINION?

When using a 5 inch pad it removes defects quicker do to the smaller size of the pad which in turn gives the pc more force. This is not only my opinion it is a well known fact and you are of the few that do not think so. There is no double teaming here. Rsurfer is his own person. I also will continue to tell you are wrong about the cut differences in pad size. I have a question for you, does pad size make a difference on a rotary or do all pad sizes cut the the same?

So is there scientific data that a 6.5" pad works as good or better than a 5.5" pad? I know because I've tried it many times. Do a search and see what others say about the smaller pads.

On a rotary the bigger the pad the more cut, but we are talking about a totally different machine.

My whole point here is that I stated my opinion and have done my own research on this topic and my conclusion is that I saw virtually no difference in cut between the two pad sizes on the random orbital.

I just don't think the difference between 1 inch is enough if any to discourage a bigger pad like a 6.5 incher, thats all.

One of the best pissing contests to date. Sounds like some of you should be wearing the pads instead of polishing with them.:D It is so annoying to see this happening to this forum. Give your opinion and move on with your life. And for the record, the smaller pad thing makes sense to me.

A 6.5 inch pad is about 20% larger than a 5.5 inch pad. That is a significant difference in the amount of power applied per square inch, or surface area. There should be no doubt that a pad size difference of that magnitude should mean a significant difference in the amount of cut. I would expect at least a 20% greater cutting speed from the 5.5 inch pads compared to the 6.5 inch pads.

I would look into the Menzerna or Megs 105 and 205 kit with 5 inch pads. I like to have atleast 5 of the following colors-orange, green, white, gray, blue, and a couple of the foamed wool pads.

To start with all you really need is the PC 7424XP, Meguiars M105 and M205, Lake Country backing plate, 2 6.5" orange LC pads, and 2 6.5" white LC pads.

The list above will get you some really wonderful results. You can always buy more pads as you go. I generally can polish an entire compact car with 2 pads without cakeup.

Personally I like to have at least 4 of each pad color on hand at all times. This is rarely necessary, but once in a while I get in a pinch and need all of them.

If you cannot find a kit with the items I have listed feel free to call Dwayne at Autogeek and he will put that package together for you I'm sure.

Thanks guys for your advise. Maybe I will get one 6.5 and one 5 and see which one works best for me on my cars. Keep in mind I am a weekend warrior and don't plan on doing this for a living.

What are the grey and blue pads used for, applying sealants and waxes?

I agree, however all I was saying last night is that I don't notice a difference when I use 5.5" pads. I find the 6.5ers to be a more versitile size pad. This is not the first place that has presented an arguement with me about this topic, lol. Maybe it is my fault that I cannot tell a difference, or maybe the difference is so small that it doesnt really matter. Don't know. Either way the population will always be against me on this, I'm sure. I was just stating my opinion.

That sounds like an awesome decision! Get both and see for yourself. I may be wrong, but I can't see a difference.

These are the pads I personally like.

CCS 6.5 inch foam pads, Lake country ccs foam pads, porter cable pads, ccs polishing pads, ccs pads, lake country ccs pads

Inside the link you will see what each pad color is for. AG also sells the same colors in the 5.5" if you prefer to go that route.

I was not trying to persuade you in either direction harshest, I was just stating my opinion and trying to give you more options.

I appologize for hijacking your post. I hope this helps.

Will the 5" backing plate work with both pad sizes?

The 5 inch backing plate will work with both. The gray has slight cut vs the blue pad. You can use the gray pad after a wash to apply paint cleaner for a quick clean up of the paint. The blue pad is for your final polish step using Menzerna 85rd, 3M Ultrafina, and Megs 205.

You should change the counterweight if you change the pad size on the PC. The stock counterweight says Use 5 inch pad ONLY. If you use the wrong sized pad for the counterweight, it can wear out the motor of the buffer prematurely.

So anyway , the kit that you want to order is a great starter kit . The page that you attached in the post explains what polish goes with the proper pad . Keep it simple and add pads as you become experienced . Too many pads and products can be confusing when you start out . AG has a great guide with video on using the swirl remover and final polish .
