Okay, so this next vehicle is a pro-bono job that I wanted to do for free for my "portfolio" as the befores and afters would be so incredibly dramatic. I wasn't fully prepared for what I'd gotten into, but for free, this machine received 24 hours of labor and a pretty incredibly dramatic transformation!!! I ruined 4 orange pads and went through 1.5 bottles of Optimum Compound... At the end of it all, the owner tipped me $200 for my time, even when I refused payment several times, he wouldn't let me say no.

So we have a 1987 Land Rover 110 imported from England by the owner. It sits on the street just up the road from my house, so I knocked on the owner's door one day and presented my proposition to him. I asked if he'd let me detail his Land Rover for free in exchange for allowing me to use it as a before and after vehicle in my portfolio. He agreed, and I found that this would be my first run-in with single-stage paint.

Process:

- Foamed with AG foam gun and Meg's Gold Class Shampoo and allowed to dwell to loosen the mud.
- Washed Via 2-bucket method using Meg's Gold Class Shampoo and genuine Lamb's Wool washing mitt.
- No claying, so I just let it air dry and then started messing around with the front passenger's side (Right-hand drive vehicle, remember!).
- Correction was achieved with Meg's Diamond Cut 2.0 Compound and Optimum Compound on LCC 4" Orange pads to remove the oxidation.
- LSP was Optimum Poli-seal applied with 6" LCC Orange pads
- Rims cleaned with degreaser and dressed with silicone spray to darken the black as the truck isn't used much.
- Tires dressed with Meg's Endurance Tire gel.

All of these first pictures give you an idea of the level of oxidation I was dealing with and the challenge set before me.

For clarification, the front driver's and passenger's side doors and the rear door are all new. The driver's and passenger's rear doors are original.

And NOW THE AFTERS!!! I did try to wet-sand the entire truck, but after 18 hours and only getting 3/4 of the passenger's side done, I decided to call it quits on the wet-sanding. Not to mention, my mother's funeral was held in the middle of detailing this, so my heart was a little broken as well.

Thanks Aub1e. I wanted it to be better than it came out, but he got quite a surprise when he saw it.
 
Probably a dumb question but are those pads toast now? As in garbage and just throw them away. I worked on a single stage painted car one time and my pad did the same thing. I was able to get all the paint out of the pad and made it look new again.
 
Really excellent job. For such a utilitarian-looking vehicle, the paint is shining way more than it should!

Wow! Great Job on the truck love the color, that roof was white lol. Nice to see an oldie in that good of condition.

No, they're fine. Just needed to clean those, but the rust spots were razor sharp on the bottoms and ate my pads.. :(

I'm with Aaron. It looks stunning. That's a high dollar machine that guy has. Even being 22 years old, the 110's go for an arm and a leg. The few early '90's models you see still sell in the 50's and 60's range. Yeah, that's $50,000 to $60,000!! Absolutely beautiful job, adrock! Thanks for posting.

Sorry for your lose . Nice Job on truck was the white stuff Egg. I ran into a couple of times and is very hard to get off once dried . Nice work.
 
Holy cow all! Thanks so much for your kind words! Steven, I'm not sure what it was on the fender, but it didn't come out completely even after wet-sanding. It got covered fairly well and you couldn't really see it unless you looked for it, but with the eyes of a detailer...you see all and it annoys me. heh

I actually haven't seen it on the street for about 2 weeks now John. I'm wondering if he put it in the shop to get the clutch installed that he ordered while I was detailing it. The part had to come from England and took like 2 weeks to ship.

I need to get with the owner and go over it after he gets it back. I want to check to see if the oxidation is coming back and maybe throw another coat of Poli-seal on it to hold it over for the winter.
