Oh No, I've Been Egged

Just before leaving to go to the in laws today, I had to get my two year old's seat out of my car. Walking past the hood I instantly noticed spots on the paint.

Thought it was my clear failing at first, then I walk to the passenger side to get the seat.

Not sure how long it's been on there. I assume just since last night. Hopefully the cold kept it from doing to much damage. There are spots on all horizontal panels.

Got back home a little bit ago, got the kids to bed, and started on the car. Got about 12 towels on it now and keep dumping hot water on it every once in a while. I did put a little bit of Dawn in the second bucket I dumped.

At least it above freezing for the moment. 36Deg right now, low 28 for tonight.
Guess I'll let it soak a little more and try washing it unless anyone suggest otherwise.
 
I got hit with one egg on Halloween as well. The impact from the egg left a lasting impression in the paint. There is a thread here that shows exactly what mine looks like, I'd find it for you but I'm on my phone about to leave work.

I wouldn't have went about removal quite the same way that you did but if it works hey. Did they actually hit the whole car?
 
Yes, I think I read it earlier and whatever else I could find. Car came clean pretty easy. Just one egg, but there was some from trunk to front left hood. Believe there was a little one the drivers side too.

Started washing the least affected areas first, and worked my way to it. Used a mitt and rinsed a lot, and went over each section with my bare hand to check and rewash.

Once I cleaned the impact area checked with my hand. Felt almost like sandpaper. Looking at it with a flashlight, not good. Nice circle of micro eggshell like fractures in the clear and a 2x3mm chip that I can see so far.
 
Tar and feather that SOB who did this....

I like the towel approach to loosen the egg, hopefully that will get her done.
 
Looks ok this morning. No spots left from where the egg sat, but the impact spot is rough. Might try to wash again today in the light.

Assume this was just random kids BS. Wife saw a bunch of mailboxes that were knocked off around the neighborhood too.

Figure it's payback/karma for all the dumb things I did to other people as a kid/teenager.

Wow, I wish it would have hit the window.





Pretty sure the egg was only on the car for one night with how easy it came off. I wasn't sure though because I don't drive it all the time and it had been sitting for at least three days. That was why I when nuts with the soaking and towels. I wanted it to come off with as little scrubbing as possible.
 
That impact mark is crazy. Sucks that this happened to you. Hope they catch those stupid kids and have them do community service so they earn enough to fix your car.
 
That makes me feel ill....Sorry that happened...
 
The shell makes a distinctive mark. It will usually chip the paint all the way to the primer.
 
Aww man that sucks! I have a very similar mark from an egg on the driver's door of my Tundra. Only thing I was able to do to diminish the look of it was a light sanding then buff to make it less pronounced.
 
Anyone ever given Dr. Colorchip a shot in minimizing something like this?

I did. It works pretty good on chips, but for the egg impact damage it didn't help my situation. Sanding it made it much less obvious, although it's still there.

Cool, so did you try the Dr. Colorchip first and then sand it, or sand first?

I'm sure it wouldn't get in the hair line fractures, but I was thinking the chips could be leveled flush.

Nasty damage to be sure, sorry for your car OP.
 
Thanks guys. I think I'm going to try and compound some first and see if it makes it less noticeable. There are a few spots in it where the looks like the clear is going chip out when I do it. Need to have that quarter panel, along with other things, redone some day. Paint was bubbling/rusting where the bumper meets the quarter before the repaint 5 years ago, and is coming back now.

I tried the Dr Colorchip first. I also didnt have much "chipping", more of the Crop circle effect. Didn't look as good as I hoped, then I broke out the sand paper. Didn't even try to get too aggressive, and just hit it with 2k then 3k. Just to lighten it up so it didn't jump rite out at me everytime I opened my door.
