I always go OE. The way I see it, OE has an incentive to make good filters (avoidance of paying for engines that grenade under warranty). I don't see the incentive for the aftermarket to sell anything but the cheapest filter at the highest price.
I don't think you can ever go wrong going OE with any engine component or fluid.

If that's the case then same can be said for motor oil as well. Amsoil Signature Series is arguably one of the best motor oils on the market backed by used oil analysis and impressive characteristics on virgin oil analysis. They do charge a premium but its also a premium oil.
