only get swirls w/wool pad and low rpm...??

I do not quite understand why i get decent results (almost LSP ready) noramlly, but when i slow down to work on un even areas and body lines, fenders i get lots of swirls. It seems like i only get great results on flat surfaces??

Ive used a hi speed units, mikita 9227, dewalt 849, etc


why is that??
 
Rotary buffers are more inclined to leave swril marks. It's just the combination of tool, paint and technique. Just finish the polishing with a DA and you should be fine. Most likely it's just soft paint.

PS Make sure the pad stays flat on uneven panels or body lines. Try different pads as well.

no thats the thing... its on a 2013 mustang, metallic paint. hard as hell.

My expierence with Fords is they do have hard paint. Guess I need to know what you are using. It still comes down to equipment, product and technique.

When you say slow down are you talking rpms or arm speed? What polish are you using? What pad? Have you used a DA and if so what were the results?
 
I use to work in body shop for 2 yrs. I did the finish buffing after it came out of the booth. 1500, 3k paper than 3m perfect 2 with a white 3m polishing pad.


for this i was a 12-1300 rpms. wool pad, 3m perfect 2 and also presta polish (1500).

I got everything out with a PC, wolfgang TSR 3.0 and a white flat pad (5.5).

I just wish i didnt have to re trace these steps. Think its time i ditch the wool for a 6pk of 8.5 inch pads.

Yes, i was just slow arm speed too.

Well I'd say you know what you're doing. 3M is a line used in production work more so than in retail. They do make good products. I too came from that side of the business doing custom painting, and buffing.

I will say 1200 on a RB with a wool pad isn't exactly slow buffing. Foam will finish down better. I stay away from big pads the trend has been to get smaller pads 5-6" maximum. I use a Dewalt minimum speed is 1000 wish it went to 600rpm like the Flex PE 14. Ever since I started using the Flex 3401 so now I rarely find myself using a RB.

IMO the 3401 combines the best of the DA and RB in one tool. Bottom line is a DA is easier to finish out swril free. Glad you found a solution.
 
ended up buying a 6' backing plate and am going to start using ccs 6.5 pads on the mikita

That's what I use on my rotary the 6' flexible backing plate and CCS 6.5 pads. A fine cut polish with a gold pad leaves a beautiful hologram free finish.

gold, as in yellow and the most aggressive cut?

What pads did you use prior the gold pad?

I'm also a 3M guy cos of my Body shop experience, but in the future who knows.

Are you getting swirls or holograms?
 
Meguiar's M100 is designed for use at 1000 RPM, my prediction is this is the trend.

In my new how-to book I have a section on "Destructive Polishing", has to do with speed and heat...

Clearcoats don't like heat...

When I worked at the body shop. I always used the back of my hand to very gently touch the panel. To feel if it is getting to hot.

Had to be even more careful. Because the car's were just painted about 2 days ago.
 
At least at the body shop it's easy to repaint a customers car, detailing you will be stuck with a huge bill. The gold "jeweling" pad is nice.
