I removed my side mirrors today to help ease the polishing process. The mirrors are easier to take off than to tape. Upon removal I noticed a lot of old dirty and debris. I decided to per-treat the area with OPC diluted 3:1 assuming it was safe to use on paint and exteriors. I let the OPC dwell for about 1 minute and began rinsing the area and proceed to preform a rinse-less ONR wash to remove the rest of the dirt. Upon drying i could noticed where the OPC ran down the door panels and even discolored/ lighten the pin-striping.

I am assuming I can polish out the staining on the painted areas but what can I do for the pinstripes/ decals to bring back the normal gloss or natural look?

Looks like a great excuse to remove the pin stripes

That might be the case. Except these strips are 25 yrs old. I'd imagine they would be a nightmare to remove. Do you have experience in removing old decals. The strips kinda give it some character.

What would be your suggestion? I'm thinking of leaving it and trying some Ultima trim and tire guard on the stripes to see if it adds color back

Streaks like that are usually the result of letting the APC sit on the paint too long and/or dry. I'm always cautious about using APC and always pre rinse the car so you're not spraying it on a dry surface. Sucks to see that this happened.

Lot of factors could have caused it, dilution too strong, paint too hot/out in the sun, left to sit too long before rinse, etc. Our garage has epoxy coated floors. I once spilled a little APC onto the floor, removed it in less than a minute but it already stained the area. So I imagine any APC is strong stuff if not used carefully.

You're not going to get the color back as it was leached out by the OPC.

Hair dryer or heat gun first on the vinyl.
I'd go with the hair dryer. Don't get in a hurry.
Then I'd have the decals replaced professionally.

Q ?

Did you see the color "run" onto the light paint? Just wondering.

I just remembered that someone posted similar experience with OPC...on a newer vehicle. Was told by Chris to wipe with a wet mf to remove the dried OPC which is notorious for leaving residue. But the pic looks like leaching.

Where the OPC dwelled on the paint is has significantly lighted the area. Almost like it cleaned the oxidation and embedded dirt from it. As far as the decals are concened it just looks like it made a milky white tinge to them
