I have a PC with a 6" backing plate and my LC variable-contact pads are a few years old. Truth is I don't remember how old they are, it's been that long and I need some ideas on what to get to replace them with.

I know they don't make the VC's anymore and I've never used any other kind of pads, so I'm really in the dark here ... help!

Since you bought those pads, the trend has been towards smaller and thinner pads for machines like the PC (all machines really). I think most members are using 5" BP's with 5.5" pads on the DA machines while on machines like the Flex 3401 6.5" because of the factory backing plate, although the aftermarket LC plate for that machine allows for smaller pads.

So now I have to get a 5" backing plate too?

I "think" I bought a Meguiars backing plate when I got my PC, I really don't remember.

Yes, my 7424 is an 'original' and my backing plate is yellow with black hook/loop. I don't really do any heavy correcting, nothing heavier than a moderate-cut foam pad can handle, so the MF polishing disks are a bit out of my league.

So figuring I'm going to get a 5", what pads would be best for light/moderate cutting (closed cell/open cell? hydro, CCS?)... my finishing pads are still in good shape.

Everybody seems to like the standard Lake Country flat pads. Their Hydro-Tech pads are really good, and although I haven't tried them, there is a lot of praise for their new Hybrid pads.

If it were me I'd probably go with Hydro-Tech tangerine, that will get you some good cut with a good finish. You could also try one of the MF pads (Lake Country, Optimum, Meguiar's) with your 6" backing plate, they really work very well, you just ideally need a small air compressor to blow them out between panels.
