Hey fellow Geeks. I am going to coat my sister's car within this month because of the winter season creeping in, and beside the fact that the car sits outside 24/7 it will require all the protection it can get. I am knowledgeable/competent on the application process, the flash time, the cure time before water can touch the surface, but for some reason I do not have any knowledge upon how long do I wait before I can add on the 2nd layer of Opti Coat 2.0. I have coated 3 cars so far with Opti Coat 2.0, but each car was with one coat only. For this situation I want to provide the "maximum amount of protection possible". If you guys have a definite answer, or a link with a reputable person with experience stating the time I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

After 12 hours and before 30 days is a the official word. However, I think 48 hours is about ideal and I would not second coat after two weeks. You are working with the resin drying time (takes around 30 days to fully dry/harden), once the first coat fully hardens the second coat will not adhere, so honestly it depends on temperature and humidity. She should baby the finish for the first 30 days. Do not go for a third layer as the third tends to show high spots (rainbow effect).

From what I've read, I'm guessing that two coats of Opti Coat 2.0 is equal in thickness to one layer of the pro version. It should do her well.

Pro installer here.

I recommend NOT putting on a second layer. As long as the first layer is properly installed you will not really be gaining much. That is just my opinion.

Can't really speak definitively for when to add a second layer since it is not recommended. I would do it after 24 hours when soft curing has occurred.

Is there really a need for more than 1 coat .... I used the original version and still going strong over a year later.

thank you for the information above. This is exactly what I needed to plan out my attack.

Hey Mark. I am using the consumer version, and not the commercial version. Are you speaking for Opti Coat 2.0 in regards to not layering?

The cars I previously coated did not have any problems with one coat of Opti coat 2.0, but because of fog, temps of 30s, 40's at night, and rarely will be washed unless by me, the car need as much protection as it can get.

There was a post somewhere by Chris@Optimum, which stated that layering does not provide any improvement in protection. The only benefit to layering would be to improve the coverage (any missed spots).

Yes, page 7 of the link above does condense the conversation down with most of Chris's postings on the topic. Also right after is a couple of arguments for layering.

My view point is if you have done the proper prep (allot of time invested) and are doing a permanent coating, go for the second coat even if the return benefit is negligible. If for nothing else than peace of mind.
