Well Looks like a have to get most of my car repainted due to a paint defect of clear coat failure, peeling paint and crows feet. Im sure I will love the swirl city my car will come back with when its done. I have used opti coat on other cars before except my own (due to negotiating with corporate to get this fixed) and have never used it on a car that has had any type of paint work done. Due the standard 3 month wait still apply. Thanks

I'm pretty sure I read it's safe to use right away, unlike traditional waxes and sealants, but I would still follow the painters recommendation, typically 30-45 days. Hopefully Chris will chime in too.

New cars have been baked and are safe right away, but 30 days or whatever the painter suggests for repaints.

sorry to thread jack...

What about after repairing a chip/scratch with dr. colorchip? Do I still need to wait a certain amount of days before opti-coat?

Thanks.

I just had my trunk repainted. When I asked the body shop manager about wax, sealant, or coating, he said even though they do bake the painted parts, 90 days is how long to wait before application.

See what dr color chips recommendation is for applying a wax or sealant after a repair.

A body shop bake is only about 190 degrees because of all the materials in a finished car...while the manufacturerers bake is done before assembly at much higher temps. 90 days seems excessive, but I would take the painters advice as he knows his products well.

According to their FAQ, "Follow up with standard waxing a week later." But at the same time, "Refrain from using a circular buffing wheel and wool pad for at least 30 days. We suggest using a random-orbit buffer with a foam pad and quality compound at all times for the best, swirl-free results (rather than the circular buffer and wool pad.)."

I guess 30 days just to be safe? But opti-coat is not supposed to be applied over wax/sealant?

I hear that 30ish days is ok, but when my girl friend got her car repainted the painter recommended 90 day . . .

When I said to see what they recommend, I meant to apply their recommendation to OC. So if it's safe for a wax after a week, the OC should be safe after a week. You are correct about not applying over another product. Sorry for the confusion.

I'd go with his recommendation even though it seems a bit excessive as he knows his product and process.

Chris - The dealership body shop I used said they bake at 145 degrees. But I'm with you about the 90 days sounding excessive. I'm sure their recommendation is based on covering themselves. You know if they say to wait 90 days people will shorten the time on their own.
