I did a review of this a while ago and it's funny that this thread came up because I was just thinking about how my thoughts have changed. Here's the link. I actually reviewed all the sponges mentioned here so far.
The ULTIMATE Sponge Comparison
I really never use sponges any more. It really as more to do with the user experience than anything. I use sponges on cars that come to me dirtier than typical. This has to do with nothing other than the ease of cleaning and inspecting after washing the vehicle. A bright, yellow sponge is so much easier to inspect than my Incredimitt/Incredipad combo I usually use. I really wish they'd had all white options to ease the inspection process.
I also only use multiple towels right now for rinseless washes. That's basically because I think towels are easier to clean than a sponge and buckets. I find filling up two buckets, cleaning them afterwards (I use APC and wipe down rather than just a rinse of the hose), and then hand cleaning a sponge to be really annoying when all I have to do is throw 8 towels in the washing machine and clean one 2 gallon bucket. This also has to do with me living in an apartment now.
I still like sponges though. They're cheap and super easy to clean out relative to microfiber in the rinse bucket. Megs wash mitts are easy to inspect since they're all white, but seem to hold onto dirt after rinsing more than sponges. The Incredi-stuff is harder to inspect as blue and white MF rather than just white. My dream sponge would be a white or bright yellow Aquasponge. It's the softest, most durable, and most porous but harder to inspect. While I never saw marring with the BRS, I never actually used it on anything I hadn't already really well rinsed and pretreated or only had dust on. I still believe pores are a critical aspect to preventing marring on anything more than pollen/dust.
