Hello everyone.

I'll be placing an order for a Porter Cable 7424 and can't decide on a backing plate. I know the plates come in different sizes which are the 3.5", 5", and 6". What is the most commonly used backing plate size? Which should I get? Will I need all sizes eventually? Also I saw on the AutoGeek store that a counter weight and adapter are for sale. Will I need the counter weight and adapter?

The size of the backing plate depends on the size of the pads you use ...

3.5" BPs can only be used for 4" pads

5" BPs can be used with 5", 5.5", 6" and probably 6.5" just fine

6" BPs can be used with 6.5" pads and 7.5" pads

So it all depends. I personally prefer a 6" BP and use 6.5" and 7.5" pads with the stock counterweight and don't have any problems. However, I do have the other BPs and pads as well, they all have their purposes. 4" pads offer the most cutting power with a PC and are nice to use in tight spots and or on headlights. 5"BP and 5.5" low profile pads are a great combo for fast cutting on large surfaces, and 6"BP and 7.5" pads are just my favorite ...

You'll be ordering a FLEX soon enough, just like me. It's a sickness, but at least you have lots of company:wave::cruisin:
