Oxidation versus Haxing: the same?

Is he paying or father? quote him $125 ($15hrs for 8hrs) if he freaks out offer him an alternative. Quote him $50 for a wash , clay, oil bath (I mean glaze) and wax. Just besure to be very clear that you are not removing any defects just hiding them. If he says he washes with dish washing liquid tell him you have a 5 minute 5 mile warrenty which ever comes first. Mustangs (94-98) are not hard to detail as it has rounded edges and not many tight spots. Obviouysly the wing will have to come off or use elbow grease to get work done under there.

Thanks Wytstang - you rock!!
You were thinking the sae amount as me.
wonder if dad is paying for it.
i can't picture even glaze and wax doing something for that puppy... but I see your point.
yep, he looks like a dawn user!!! LOL
Joke may be on me!!!!!!!
thank you again - and thank you bigfoot and Sneek!!!!

Oxidation does NOT come from hard water and sprinklers and such but rather it is a process taking place on a molecular level where oxygen atoms are being messed with....can't remember the exact process but it happens along those lines.

A single stage car protected in a museum will still oxidize and clear coats will also oxidize BUT they do not turn "chalky" as do single stage paints. So while all paints oxidize clear coats do not oxidize in the same manner as single stage for there is no pigmented paint.

Lauren, what are you going to do? If you go for it please post your process. It will be interesting to see. I'm sure you can make it look much better.

There are "two" definitions of oxidation.

1. In the organic sense, oxidation is the addition of any bonds to oxygen. Hydroxyl to ketone, the addition of a hydroxyl group, etc. Reduction is just the opposite, like isopropanol converting to propane.

2. Oxidation is the loss of electrons, this is usually covered in inorganic chemistry. Reduction is the gain of electrons.

I would really like to know at the molecular level what is going on. I imagine that UV rays are breaking the polymer bonds leaving it open for some type of electrphillic attack via oxygen, probably through a free radical. If there are any paint chemists out there, i would love some links or insight.

I'll ask David when I get the chance, he explained it to me one day but lost me with big words like....."oxygen":D

I'll post up his terminology.

LOL I never thought I would see these words again after bio/chem.

So does applying a pure polish to dead paint a redox reaction? I know that you can get oxidized SS paint back to its original colour with a pure polish (not heavy oxidization). Or is that just because even pure polishes have very light cleaners in them?

Whatever you do..."Good luck we are alll counting on ya!" LOL! Like everyone mentioned do a test area and if you don't like the results tell the kid this is the best I can do...take it or leave...or just refuse to do the job! Keep us informed!

Thank you, Turbos17, and everyone else. he is upposed to set a date with me - we shall see if I hear back - if so, I want to try to see what I can do with it!! Thanks for rooting for me.
