I heard that evenm useing that many times it takes a very long time for there to be even a mesuarable differance in paint level

I certainly can be wrong, but I don't think having a thinner layer of clear vs a slightly thicker is going to cause a noticeable difference in gloss?

I too have heard you can polish for many many years with PC.

sure, 15 years of bi anual polishing/cleaning will decrease the depth of shine. So if you are keeping a show car, it most likely will not be polished that often. If you keep your daily driver for more than 15 years, congratulations as most of us aren't that patient or lucky.

It really depends on how often you polish, what products you use, and how bad is your paint prior to polishing.

Yep!

From a few posts I've seen, you can easily polish like 25 times with a PC and not worry about compromising the clear. But that being said, when people do a high dollar paint job on a car, they typically add several coats of clear because it adds more depth to the color than you would get with just a couple. So I suppose you could be hurting the look over several years as it thins.

I think a lot depends on the product you are using. There are some pretty agressive polishes out there that I would not want to use on my personel cars to often. From reading a lot of different threads on different detailing forums I think a lot of professional detailers care more about using something that will get the job done fast then how much clear cloat they are taking off on someone's elses car. I also don't hear to many detailers talk about using a paint gauge. They usually just start going at someone's elses car with not really knowing anything about how much clear coat the have to work with or worry about how much they take off. Starting out was the least agressive polish is always the best choice if you care about the car being polished. Personally I would rather use something that might take a little longer and is less aggressive on my own cars.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that you can use an aggressive polish on an orange pad about 15-20 times before you need to start worrying.

However, I think that once a car is polished with the orange pad and is well taken care of, you can polish with a white pad once or twice a year and not worry about anything...

That depends on the polish. For instance XMT #4, if you polish your paint with this 15 times, you'll be polishing the base coat. Aggressive polishes like this should be used MAYBE once a year, but really on a have-to basis. XMT #1 you could polish 15 times before you need to start worrying.

The above replies sound par with OEM paint i'm not sure you can polish a repaint as many times as most repaints are applied thinner then a factory coat of paint..

My dad did a lot of detailing when he was youger and he told me that I could polish to my hearts content and I probably wouldn't go through the clear coat as long as I owned the car. (Meaning 20-30 times no problem)

What polish is this?

I'm thinking like an XMT 1 or something with minimal abrasive qualities

Yes, probably. I mentioned this in a few replies before. It all depends on the vehicle and the type of CC the automobile has.

If you polish 3x a year with XMT #1, that's 5 years of polishing. That's a heck of a lot of polishing.

rotary: yes

PC: The pc doesnt really remove clearcote. It rounds the edges of the swirls, sometimes fixing them, sometimes leaving some. If you polished agressively ALOT, then you might worry about something in a few years..

Using a mild finish polish should be ok for years.......but it really depends on the paint condition

My take on this is to keep the plolishing to a minimum by reducing the marring in washing and winter up keep. I learned a lesson this winter by taking my truck thru a Shell wash to knock the salt off. It did a big amount of damage and will never do it again. Just one wash and it was evident. I usualy use a spray off wash and do not use anything but the rinse to make the sealant and wax last longer. The spray off washes tend to use a caustic soap and thus reducing the protection. Keep the damage down and use the least aggresiive polish to correct damage and you will make the clearcoat last as long as possible.

Polishing (smoothing) the clear is going to add gloss not take away from.
