I sent an email to P21s regarding Total Auto Wash regarding if it was safe on vinyl stripes on my Mustang Shelby.

Their email said to avoid the stripes, but only because they were unsure.

I wanted to know if anyone here has used P21s TAW on vinyl graphics or stripes and what was the result? Safe?

I have heard and seen good results with 303 vinyl cleaner on the stripes. I have some for when I do mustangs. I would look into it :)

Do you know if your stripes are a 3M product?

I have done extensive research concerning maintenance for car/truck wraps and contacted 3M who makes most of the material for wraps. I have an answer if the stripes are a 3M product.

Yes they are 3m commercial grade vinyl. I got them from Baltimore Street Mods if that matters.

For what it's worth, P21S TAW is the engine cleaner/degreaser a lot of pros like to use because it is known for cleaning well without stripping or weakening all those labels and stickers in the engine bay.

Good to know :xyxthumbs:

I started this project after a client requested eco-friendly products for the proper care & maintenance of her 37 company truck wraps. Each truck wrap costs upwards of $3,000. Fifteen new trucks with wraps will be delivered this fall.

Here is the 3M bulletin link which is the longest link I have ever seen.

This is part of my presentation to the truck company.

When it comes to deterioration and failure of vinyl based materials, the biggest single cause is washing with harsh, usually highly caustic materials that literally dry out and destroy the graphic. Vinyl, like paint needs nourishment and UV protection to prevent fading and cracking.

To prevent your new investment from deteriorating before your eyes just follow this simple philosophy:

Just say “NO” to unacceptable products that will damage your graphics!

NO - Over the counter items purchased from the local auto parts store
NO - Car/truck shampoos, cleaners, polishes, waxes, etc…these products are formulated for car and truck Paint - NOT Vinyl Laminated Graphics!
NO - Dishwashing soaps, soaps will dry out the wrap and accelerate material failure
NO - Products containing PETROLEUM DISTILLATES
NO - Petrochemicals, abrasive or corrosive materials
NO - Degreasers
NO - Solvents
NO - Chemicals
NO - Alcohol
NO - Abrasives
NO - Brushes
NO - Scrubbing pads of any type - magic erasers, brillo pads, etc
NO - Cotton towels or shop rags
NO - Car dusters. They will only grind debris into the graphic
NO – Quick wipe, towel dust-offs that will grind debris into the graphic
Gasoline and diesel fuel spillage will damage the graphics and should be cleaned immediately with an appropriate, graphic safe cleaner

I cannot vouch for other products in the market place for care & maintenance of car/truck graphics as I only researched ONR & OCW which were approved with 3M Graphics Market Center.

All of this time researching paid off after my presentation to the truck company. I landed the truck account for semi-annual wrap cleaning only! No tires, bumpers, grills, etc…just the wrap area. Sweet :dblthumb2:

Thanks for the full detail. What is ONR & OCW?

I am both surprised and not surprised at the information you post.

On one hand, I have washed my car (stripes and all) with Dawn twice a year (yes I am not doing this anymore), pre wax cleaned, and waxed my stripes for 2 years now and they look and feel like new.

However I totally understand the science behind why the vinyl should not be treated with these chemicals over the long term.

Honestly in my experience if my only goal was longevity of the stripes, I would use 303 protectant, I love that stuff.

However since I was planning to change stripes every 2 years of so, I will probably keep waxing the stripes. Mostly I was concerned that the P21s would cause immediate failure of the stripes, which still there seems to be no DIRECT data on.

Thanks again.

ONR is Optimum NO Rinse Wash & Shine
OCW is Optimum Car Wax

I did find that P21s contains citrus solvent and I have no idea if this solvent will cause immediate failure or not. :dunno:

Are you putting a wax or sealant over the wrap or are you just cleaning it? I'm assuming you're using the Optimum Car Wax?
