While I was detailing my truck over the weekend ... I wanted to get into a tight spot ... and waiting to do all of these at the end. I ordered some of these pads Lake Country Beveled Edge 3.5 Inch Pad Pack not long ago, just for this reason.

I broke out the white pad ... started with the Menz IP ... and I noticed that the pad "swelled up" WAY more than it should. All of the sudden ... "POOF!!" ... The pad totally ripped apart, shot up OVER the roof on my house, and is now up there.

The hook and loop & just a little part of the pad is all thats left. I was appling NO pressure, and the pad was flat on the surface that I was working on. I was using my UDM, on speed 5. Im not sure is this was a possible pad defect, pad failure bad luck, or something else.

Im just SUPER glad that I caught it, and was able to get the machine off of the paint, before the backing plate hit it!!

Any clue?

Sounds like the pad absorbed a chemical and the heat generated cause it to expand to the point of combustion. Thats a new one though I've never read this before, bet it was a sight to see.

holy cowl mike!! ur just moving to fast for the pad.lol.so did u take pictures of pad and roof?not to change subjects but did u ever take pics of ur truck finished?

Brian ... LOL ... I wish that was the problem. I ment to take pictures of the little bit of pad that was left ... but I threw it away already. The majority of it is still on the roof ... When I get it down, I will take a picture.

Im SOOOO lucky that I did not scratch my truck ... OMG I couldn't even imagen that!!

Brian ... I took a few quick shots ... I didn't have time to setup a nice "photoshoot" with it ... Ill post some better ones when I have some time to take some ... But heres a few ... Just you Brian!!

Any one have a clue if this would be a pad failure? ... Or what could of caused this?

I thought I spotted a UFO the other day. I'm glad it didn't damage your truck. I have had pads fly off before but never to POOF and fly on top of my house.

It was the craziest thing I have EVER seen while detailing. It was definitly not because it wasn't on good enough. It was actually hard to get the velcro part of the pad off of the backing plate. Like I said ... I noticed it starting to swell (WAY WAY WAY more than the normal "swelling" you see while buffing) ... and I like ... WTF? ... Then POOF!!! and parts when flying!!! ... One chunk OVER the house and into the back yard. The rest is still ON (ALL the way up top at the peak) the roof.

Im just SOOOO glad that I caught it fast enough and the backing plate didn't dig into my paint.

Im guessing that it was some sort of pad failure, malfucntion, or just one that wasn't quite made right. I was really looking forward to using those small pads on small areas too!! ... Kinda scared now ...

Brian ... Thanks dude ... They look better filled with smoke :righton:

Ill have to take you for a cruise in the truck too. Its fun with the current setup (mid 400's) ...

And I should be breaking 600+ with the new setup. :righton:

kick ass.you ever run that beast down the track?

With this setup now ... everything is being pushed about to its limit, and runs hot.

Right now ... It would/should yeild low 14's high 13's (nv4500 dont like to shift super fast, and 35's dont help ... lol) ... And thats without launching in boost

With the new setup ... Ill be happy with 12's. It will be capable of hitting 11's ... but with the 3600 12cb double disc clutch setup I am going to run to hold the power ... Im not sure if I could shift fast enough to get that times ... and again ... 35's ...

When I get the newset all done ... I will hit the track for sure ... but just for fun and to get a time out of it.

I built this truck more as a street rod, then a track truck. Its wicked on the street now ... I cant wait till 600+!! :righton:
