I just like to know, what size pads do yous commonly use on a rotary? I now have 8.5in LC pads, 6in edge double side pads ( w/o an adapter yet), 5in pads and spot 4in pads. backing plates I have 7in 5in 4in for the rotary. I don't see many use double side pads, why? is it fairly new?

I find the 8.5in pads not suitable for doors and bumpers, does anyone use 8in pads for the whole car?

Does anyone use a 3.75 in plate with 5.5 pads?

Sure you can, but why would you do that when you have a 5" backing plate? The less overhang on the pad the better, however you should have a minimum 1/4" over hang to protect the paint from coming in contact with the plate. The double sided Edge pads has been out for some time. 3M has just come out with double sided Ultrafina pads in 8". I would give them a try if they came in 6". I personally don't like double sided pads because of the thickness. I would have given the 3M pads a try if they came in 6" size only because I like the Ultrafina pads. Been using single sided pads for so long that double sided pads just doesn't feel right.

Does anyone have this? or is this backing plate too expensive thats not worth it?

That 3M backing plate supposed to be a high quality backing plate but it is a bit pricey. If your looking for a similar type backing plate that is a little more affordable look at the Megs solo w66, Rubbish boys or gloss-it.

I personally like these types of backing plates as the foam cushion allows for better contouring around curves.

I'm not sure what there's not more talk about the Edge double sided pads?

It's nice to have a variety of pads in your arsenal so you can change pads to fit the panel you're working on. I hate to abuse these pictures but they do a good job making this point.
