Does it matter what pads are used for the rupes
Yes.
Rupes created a "system approach" to polishing paint, not a single tool, pad or product.
The backing plates are engineered for the tool and the pads. The pads are engineered for the backing plates, tool and products.
I've documented more classes on using the Rupes "system" than anyone, (I think, don't ever see any pictures of Rupes classes anywhere else in the blogosphere), and matching the product and correct pad to the tool is important to get the best performance out of the tool.
Besides that Rupes created a system approach their pads are also very well made.
Here's one thing you can do...
Hold your RUPES polisher in the air with one hand and with the tool turned on and locked into the "on" position and notice the vibration.
Next... attach a RUPES pad to the backing plate and then turn the tool on, locked on the "on" position and then pay attention to how the tool feels while running at any speed?
No vibration.
The RUPES pads are designed, that is size, shape, weight, everything about them, to the backing plates and the tool itself.
You can certainly use the RUPES tools with other pads and products, but if you run into any problems the first place to start looking for the culprit isn't the tool or even your technique, but the pads and the products. At least, that's how I would start to troubleshoot any issues.
