Pads & sizes

Ok, so I'm currently using a PC 7424 with a 6" backing plate and 7" (7.5") pads. The pads are about toast and I need some feedback on what to do next because all the new pads and sizes confuse the heck out of me.

Is a 5" backing plate the correct one to get for 6.5" pads? Could I even use 6.5" pads on a 6" plate so I wouldn't have to get the smaller plate?

Finally, what pads are the better ones to get for results, longevity etc.

Rookie questions I know, but I've been out of the loop for a while and forgot a lot of what I used to know.

If I remember correctly (I bought my PC over 12 years ago) there is a 5" and 6" counter weight for the PC. Where would I pick up the correct one?

As far as plate and pad sizes, I like to start with the 5" plate for the 5.25"/5.5" pads.

There are a ton of pads to choose from, and they all offer great quality.

The most common starting point here is with the Lake Country flat, or ccs lines in orange (cutting), white (polishing), and grey (finishing).

These are popular because of their ease of use, and great durability.

I also enjoy using the Hydrotech Cyan cutting pads, select Hex Logic / Buff & Shine pads, and Rupes microfiber pads.

Great selection here as well.

Foam & Wool Buffing Pads for Dual Action, Rotary/Circular Polishers and Cyclo Orbital Polishers.

You will notice a HUGE increase in performance by switching to 5.5" low profile pads! I like Lake Country Flat and Hydrotechs.

Forget the counter weight business. Use the one that's on there.

In summation......DO NOT use any pads greater than 5.5" on the PC7424. It needs small pads to operate at peak efficiency!

I have to agree with spiralout...small and thin! When my black line on my backing plate becomes a stationary blur of black i either switch out to a fresh pad or lighten up my pressure!

The new Megs 5" THIN pads would do wonders for your DA-- Meguiars 5 Inch DA Foam Discs

Don't worry about the counterweight, since you're a Meg's guy measure your current backing plate, if it's like 5-3/4" go with these: Meguiars 6 Inch DA Foam Discs That should be a huge difference over those old thick 7.5" pads.

Or try microfiber pads: Meguiars DA Microfiber Finishing Discs, wax pads, finishing pads They come in cutting, also.

Agreed.

Pick up a 5" backing plate and the new thin Meguiar's pads. They work great on a porter cable. I just tested these pads on the PC 7424XP.

Changing the weights is a waste of time IMO unless you are sanding wood. I have run bp's from 6" -3" without any problems on my old PC.
