Hello everyone,

Ive been lurking on this forum for a while now and have started accumulating my detailing knowledge from here, which is still basic at best.

Unfortunately my first post wont be a positive one. My car was in a bit of an accident ( lost a mirror -> mirror broke -> the pieces scratched the paint).

The main area affected is directly under the mirror and then spreads in a couple of small chips through the side of the car. Only about 2-3 are not actually on the door.

Now my insurer wants to paint the whole of the side of the car. I was mortified. As I more or less consider this forum the grail of detailing I would like to ask for your opinion on whether these chips can be filled in with touch up. So far im leaning towards having just the door repainted and have the side swipe taken care of by my detailer + the 2-3 chips on the cars body.

Apologies for the horror show.

The paint is BMW X10 Tanzanite Blue. Its a dark blue with extremely deep flakes. Also it has cquartz uk applied.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi vnhood,

Sorry your question has not been answered by myself or any of our forum members yet...

I just read your PM and then found your posts with questions about rock chip repair.

To answer your question rock chips and other areas where pant is missing can be filled in with touch up paint.

The question is.... what are your expectations for how the end results look?

If want the damaged area to look 100 percent like NOTHING ever happened then I'd recommend getting the damaged areas repainted.

If you will be happy when you stand 5 feet away and your eyes are not instantly attracted to the body panel where the damage occurred then I'd recommend the Dr. Color Chip system.

What I have found in the last 20+ years of detailing cars, teaching car detailing and answering questions about rock chip repair is usually people have unrealistic expectations for what can and cannot be done.

I'd recommend reading my how-to article for using Dr. Color Chip as I go into depth about the process and what can and cannot be done.

Mike is 100% correct and I'll also add (retired autobody/paint) touching up heavy metallic colors makes getting a satisfactory match even tougher.
