Everyone always says, the best thing you can do with a boat is to not to own one, but to have a friend who owns one. Well, my "friend-with-a-boat" texted me a week or so ago asking about getting some work done on his boat. During the summer, it spends most of it's time on a lift over the water and as such takes quite a beating from the sun, and had some pretty good oxidization going on. "Maybe I should've been waxing it," he said. Hindsight is 20/20, right?

I asked him to shoot me some pictures so I could get a plan of attack together. Here's what I received:

No reflection, no shine, nothing. The trailer was also pretty neglected, you can get a glimpse of it in one of the above pictures. My friend said the only time it got "washed" was when they dunked it in the lake to load and remove the boat once a year. Such a shame for such a nice boat to be like this! Thankfully, this isn't the end of the story!

The goal with this job was the best bang for the buck. This meant a one step correction process, and since it's a friend, letting him do as much as possible to save him some money. I went with Marine 31 Gel Coat Gloss & Color Restorer. This was definitely more than "light" oxidization, but I felt that their "heavy cut compound" wouldn't have finished down enough to suit me. My friend has said his goal was to have it shiny and black again, so I figure something called "Gloss and Color Restorer" is just what the doctor ordered! :props:

I started by introducing my friend to ONR and the Garry Dean method. Once he had it down, the two of us tackled the whole boat and trailer and were done in under 20 minutes. At this point, I let him tackle the interior while I got to work on the paint.

Test spot with an 8" purple foamed wool pad and Marine 31 Gel Coat Gloss & Color Restorer on a rotary:

As you can see, the test spot is HUGE(a little over 2'x3'). This stuff went so far it was unreal. This test spot was done with just 3 dime sized drops on a primed pad, and I had zero issues with the product dusting or drying out. Oxidization was gone and the black definitely looked black, but the gloss wasn't quite there. I tried again, and this time worked the product a little longer to let the diminishing abrasives do their their thing and viola! Gloss was back, and the test spot looked great. I was happy, he was happy, let's do this thing! :buffing:

Obligatory reflection shot. I was really focusing on the black here, but even the white has great gloss and clarity.

A better look at the white paint:

The interior came out looking great as well. Despite not keeping the boat waxed and protected, apparently he had very faithfully wiped all the seats down and sprayed with 303 after almost every outing. Kind of ironic, isn't it?

The trailer cleaned up, caked on brake dust removed from the wheels, and tires dressed:

The owner was extremely happy with the results. I wrapped it all up by showing him how to apply wax with a DA polisher, and he just loved how easy it was. He ended up purchasing one along with some quality wax, so hopefully this boat will stay beautiful for years to come!

Thanks all for viewing, happy detailing!

Great job! I am about to attempt my first boat detail for a friend myself. I already bought the Marine 31 polish and a few foamed wool pads. Did you use a rotary buffer? Reason I ask is because I have a Flex 3401 and have been told that it is going to be a long job using it on a gel coat. Also before you polish do you clay it just like you would a vehicle?

Great Job!

My brother bought a 24' and gel coat is in about the same shape. I am totally new when it comes to boats. Would reg auto compounds work on a gel coat or do I need marine specific products?

Boat looks great! That is some very nice work done there.

He used a rotary with 8" foamed wool pads.

Holy smokes, that looks fantastic, especially for being only a one step. Nice work

Great job! I am going to have to get me some of that product. Was the whole boat done with a DA?
