These defects were on the car when I bought it second hand.

Can someone tell me what they are and what caused them?

I'm guessing I'll need to wetsand with 3000 or 2500 then compound / polish?

Not knowing what they are has been making me hold off. The car has a couple simular spots.

Thanks

Looks like bird droppings. Can you get a closer pic?

Car is a 2002 Accord. Unstable clear is what I was afraid of and why I've been holding off a repair.

I'll crop this photo and post using high resolution tomorrow. If needed I can get a closer picture in a few days.

Merry Christmas / Happy holidays to all!

Yeah, based on the pic it looks like etching caused by bird droppings left to dwell for a bit too long.

as other said bird drop etchings Can you see any cracks in the clear coat in the area?

If you look closely it seems like lots of interconnected lines of defect with the paint between them intact.

Wouldn't it be more of a uniform stain over the entire area if it were bird etchings? (Really hoping to be wrong here since clearcoat failure I think will be mpre of a major repair)

Here's an additional photo

Will wetsanding, compound and polish lessen it, or has the clear been damaged to the extent that nothing can be done without a major repair?

Thanks

Looks like bird droppings. If thats the case, not really much you can do. Polish, but not to crazy because you do not want to completely erode the clear.

It looks like either bird droppings, or some other acidic substance sat on the paint for too long and etched its way into the clear. All the individual cracks (crows feet) are too deep to completely fix, but could possibly be made to look a little bit better with a light polish. You might use something with heavy fillers to mask the cracks, but I don't think you'll ever hide them completely. Paint work is needed to fix the issue completely.

I would advise against the wet sanding. Factory clear coats are too thin to begin with. Since it seems the clear has be compromised with the cracks or crows feet as they are called heavy compounding or wet sanding will only cause more damage.

Really the only way to fix this is to repaint, or at least reclear, which I would recommend to just have a pro do it all

Thanks for all the responses. At least one of the spots was clayed, compounded and polished. (M105 on orange and 205 on white)

I guess my wife will continue not even knowing these spots are there. (really can't believe this - they bug me and I don't even drive the car)
