Paint Quality?

I was curious to hear opinions on factory paint quality. Does Mercedes use a better paint than say Ford? Or is a PPG or Dupont paint a paint? That being said, products aside would you be able to get a better shine out of a higher quality paint? Talk amongst yourselves, I will get you a topic, Internal combustion engines that are neither internal nor combustion.

Nice. I think it has more to do with the clearcoats than the paint that's underneathe. Aside from that, I really just wanted to applaud the reference.

There probably are higher/lower quality paints...more than likely, it would be difficult to identify which paint manufacturer falls below the "higher quality bar".

Most automotive manufacturers have at least three paint suppliers that meets the manufacturer's engineering standards set forth. It's hard to find out on a day-to-day (often hour-by-hour) which paint manufacturers' paint is being applied in the factories' paint kitchens. As long as the manufacturer's paint quality standards are being met, then, evidently, it's a "high enough quality paint" for the job at hand.

It's been estimated that DuPont and PPG manufacture more than 80% of all automotive paint used worldwide....Including base-coat/clear-coat paints....and that's on at least 90% of vehicles leaving the assembly lines everyday...and, in that case, the clear-coat is what everyone wants to make "shiny"

IMO....Clear-coat-paint-film finishes are not particular about the automotive clear-coat paint care products you use to make them shiny...unless, that is, they are overly abrasive.

This would be a great question to ask someone who owns a body shop. I wonder if they use the same type/make of paint when painting a Benz vs a Ford or if there is a difference in the OEM paint.
