Paint Sealent steps

Hello guys, what are the steps when using a paint sealent. This would be on a new car. Thanks
 
Are you asking for just how to apply a sealant? Or are you asking what prep work should be done prior to applying a sealant?
 
For us newbies that were raised on old school paste wax this new sealant thing can be confusing. I know I'm over-simplifying this but a sealant and wax are the same thing except a sealant has no "wax". After you look at it that way, it just comes down to each product's application instructions. Generally speaking the steps are the same.
 
If surface is smooth & clean, generally its just apply sealant, let haze & buff off. If surface is rough & dirty, it will need washed, clay barred, maybe a light polish and then apply sealant as usual.
 
I should have explained my self better. Would you lightly polish or wax the paint and then seal? Or just put the sealant on the new car smooth paint. Thanks
 
if the paint is smooth and has no defects... yes u can just wash dry and apply sealant. if the suface has contaminates and it rough u want to wash, clay, light polish then sealant.

If you do not have swirls, scratches or marring of concerns, then a light polish will prep the surface after which you can apply a sealant. A sealant will fill the pores of your paint to create a near level surface. A good carnauba can be added for added protection and gloss finish. Typically, most drivers will only use a good sealant for their everyday driver. Hope this helps.

Just as a side note....a wax will go on top of a sealant....

After you've cleaned, clayed, polished etc. - apply your sealant, and if you choose apply a quality wax on top of that. This is how I do it. Some people prefer only a sealant, but I prefer to do both. A sealant for the durability and a quality wax for the added gloss and shine.

Like you I'm old school. Not as far back as a one room school house but almost! :laughing:

Sealants are nothing more than synthetic waxes but they have come a long way and are very easy to use.

"Paint sealants are kind of the anti-carnauba. They last a lot longer, they are easy to apply, and there’s nothing natural about them. This is surface science at its best.


A paint sealant is made of polymers, which are composed of tens of thousands of synthetic particles that are linked together. When a sealant bonds to your vehicle’s paint, it forms a rigid shell. It is not the warm carnauba that seems to melt into the paint. Paint sealants sit on top of the paint like a transparent chain metal suit. They are glossy and slick, but carnauba lovers will tell you they do not have the warmth and depth of a carnauba."

Out of curiosity...

What are you working on?

Even a new car can have bonded contaminants, so before you apply the paint sealant, maybe do the Baggie Test

Thanks BobbyG and Mike. It is a friends daughter new Lexus IS dark gray in color. Just wanted to help him put on a protective coat since this car is a everyday driver and she will taking it to get it hand washed probably weekly. Thank for all the help guys.

Wat about putting wax first then the sealant last how that sounds?

NO , you do not want to do it in that order. Wax should go on top of sealant not under.

Sealant over wax could cause problems.

Sealants in many cases last longer than waxes but for some reason don't provide that pop or depth we're all looking for. Adding wax over the sealant provides more depth and adds an additional layer of protection as well.

Don't worry, if you seal over wax I don't think you'll find it on the ground in the morning...

I tripped over my sealant this morning :doh:

Some combinations may be ok but I used a teflon sealant over wax that was a couple months old and the paint bubbled :mad:on both cars.

Better be safe than sorry !

What if we are talking about a wax with over 50% carnauba which we all know is PRICEY WAX but is it really worth buying it to use it on customers cars when they request wax?? These type of wax would last from 8 to 12 months I guess almost like the sealant
