Paint thickness Gauge?

I would like to measure the paint thickness on my vehicle. I am in the fayetteville NC area. Does anyone know how I can get this done or know someone that can do it for me? I don't trust auto body shops around here since they are the reason I need to get my paint measured. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
Go to CarMax and slip a salesman $20 Have them check multiple areas and bring a notepad ;)
 
This HIGHLINE meter is great. I've had one a few years now and love it. It only does metal, not plastic.
 
They don't measure bondo either

They also can't differate between clear and paint. What one really needs is a CMG
 
Hey thanks guys! I will try Carmax first and see if they will help me out. The reason I am wanting to check the paint thickness is because a few years ago (before I had discovered autogeek) I had my Ford F150 detailed at a local detail shop, which did a horrible job. There were holograms and scratches from the dirty wool pad all over. They burned through the paint down to the primer and metal in several places. My insurance company paid to have my truck repainted, but I am wondering if the body shop actually repainted the entire vehicle. When I polish or wax with a DA or by hand, there is always black paint on the pad. And I can still see some of the scratches from the detail shop. My neighbor thinks they just blended paint over the low spots and buffed the car really good but got paid for painting the entire truck. I just want to know if it was done right so I can have some peace of mind or, if needed, get it painted like it was supposed to have been. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Sounds like a nightmare....I would tend to agree with your neighbor, that the BS probally just painted the sections that were damaged, and recleared the rest. How much did they charge you?

When you say you have black stuff on your pads....thats kinda odd. What color is your truck? What polish are you using? Its not a single stage is it?

Anyway, drive by a CarMax and just come right out and ask a salesman if they can help you. I'm sure they will, as helping someone in a time of need could lead to future business for them
 
It's a black 2005 F150. Its not single stage, so that is what is worrying us. I only paid my deductible ($100) but the total bill for my insurance was over $4000. A few trim pieces were replaced because they were damaged by the buffer also, but the majority of that is all paint and labor. I get black with any polish. I have used the Wolfgang line, klasse, and meguiars products. Nothing with that much cut and I have never used a rotary.

Side note, my wife just said she remembers when we picked up the truck from the BS, and she pointed out a few swirls on the tailgate and the manager used a 3M product called polishing pad glaze on it and said that it was nothing to worry about because that took care of them. The truck left the body shop with RIDS Shinier RIDs anyway. Lol
