Painted Calipers and Rotor Hats

Thanks everybody!!!!!!!

Wow, that looks great! :props: Where does one get the caliper painting kit? And you didn't have to take the caliper off?

I got it from ebay for less than 30$. If you do it with the calipers on like I did than you want to lift it and take all 4 wheels off at the same time. Reason being is the G2 (2 Part Epoxy) has the color and the hardener. Once you add the hardener and mix them you only have a few hours to do all your coats. I did 3 coats and still had plenty of paint left over.

Very cool! I love that G2 epoxy; I did a customer's truck with it a few years back.

Cool, you did a nice job, they look awesome.

Did you choose black over silver because it hides the dirt?

I was not happy with the caliper paint kit like the one Corey used. I felt it just looked 2nd hand after dried. I would like to have current ones powdercoated but dont have the time to remove and ship.

Are the rotors painted in Corey's pictures? I would think that would cause ill effects?

What kind of "ill effects"? Corey did paint the rotors, just the hats and edges. He taped off the surfaces where the pads contact.

I think it's like any paint job, it's all in the prep. It's only going to be as smooth as the surface beneath the paint and calipers aren't very smooth, will require much grinding and sanding to create a smooth finish.

Painting the rotor surfaces would not be to much of an issue for a normal street driven car. Of course the paint would be abraded off at the first few brake applies, and the paint would accumulate on the brake pads and around the caliper, but IMO it really isn't that big of a deal ;) Still, I prefer to mask them off like Corey did for neatness sake.

Another method would be to remove the discs by unbolting the caliper from the bracket, unbolting the caliper support bracket, and suspending the caliper so it doesn't hang by the brake hose.

To powder coat the calipers you would need to remove them completely, remove all or most seals, take them to the powder coater for a few days, rebuild them back up (probably use new guides at the very least) not to mention re-tapping or clearing out any paint left in any threads. Of course you would also have to re-bleed the brakes and add more fluid. I should also advise brake fluid is the devil to paint. Hate someone? Pour some brake fluid on their hood and watch the paint fall off in a few hours.

Corey's method is the most simple and least disruptive method for the guy who does not have a shop or mechanics doing the work. Not to mention powder coating costs mucho dinero.

Rear rotors were new but not painted, and turned rusty after the first wash:

Yep! Messy, expensive, and my seals never went on like they should although no leaks. Further, after a year of track use with Pagid race pads the gold is not as gold anymore :( This cost me about $500 total. Next time I'm doing it Corey's way!

Turned out pretty good. I was thinking of using the G2 on mine either a black or a silver, thats if I don't swap to Brembos

Looks great Corey soon you won't have anything left to do too the SkyBaby
Now it's time to move toward the performance side of things, upgraded turbo, intercooler, charge pipes, etc.:hungry:

love the look of painted calipers, even if its just a flat black. you should invest in some drilled/slotted rotors.
