PC 7424xp and taping

I just purchased the Detailer's Choice Wolfgang Porter Cable 7424XP Swirl - Free Kit 3.0, Lake Country 5.5 Inch CCS Pads 6 Pack - Your Choice! , and a bunch of extra cobra microfiber towels. I've slowly been stocking up, studying the forum, and soaking up everyone's knowledge like a sponge!

I have a Denali and I'm unsure how to handle the plastic trim/side molding, and front and rear bumpers. I haven't located any information how to properly tape or care for these areas. Any suggestions on how to properly tape and tackle these areas with the PC, and the tough areas where the PC will not access would be awesome.

Would these be needed in the process? CCS Euro Foam Hand Applicators Trio
How benneficial would a Brinkmann Maxfire Dual Xenon Rechargeable Swirl Finder Spotlightbe during the process? Should I add to cart?

Lastly, does anyone have any experience regarding what would look best on top of the WG deep gloss sealant 3.0 (white paint)? I'm considering toping it off with either the Wolfgang Füzion Carnauba Polymer Estate Wax 3 oz. Mini or the Pinnacle Liquid Souveran™ Car Wax .

You need to tape up emblems, unpainted trim, and other sensitive areas (using blue painters or green tape) that may get in contact with the polisher to prevent damage. The tape comes in several widths so you can pick the right one that gives you the best coverage.

You will need to hand polish areas you cannot reach with the PC like in the link you posted.

The Brinkman does come in handy to check your work but you do not have to have it.

Hey Bunky,

looks like you got yourself a really nice kit! Congrats on that.

As far as taping..as Superd said, tape all plastic/emblems etc...also what you could do, say if you have a full plastic or metal bumper...just put a line of tape on the edge closest to where you'll be buffing...and then just tape a towel or junk sheet of some sort onto it to cover the REST of the bumper (to protect from splatter or dust etc).
Saves tape and time doing it that way!

Its $20...1000 Watts and the 2 lights actually detach...its pretty cool..mine just got delieverd today. I've seen a couple bad write ups on it but then ive seen some where the light was beat to hell and still was running strong. Mine went together easily, just make sure you dont touch the bulb when you put it in (if you get one) ....i guess the oil from your fingers make the bulb burn out faster.

The other thing i snagged was a Commercial Electric LED light from Home Depot for about $25. Its rechargable, SUPER bright...very portable and seems pretty sturdy (dropped it once already lol). It was in the section with all the other Halogen work lights....just an option other than the Brinkmans you mentioned.

In a perfect world, if you work carefully and pay close attention to the task at hand you wouldn't have to tape any trim off because you wouldn't run any of your buffing pads over the trim and cream them out with compound, polish or wax residue.

In the real world, it's all to easy to accidentally run a pad loaded with some type of paint care product over "Pebble Textured Black Plastic Trim" and you will create a never-ending nightmare as far as trying to remove the residue 100%


That's why a lot of people including myself choose to place painter's tape over the trim. It's faster for me to tape the trim on a car off and then not have to worry about getting residue on it then it is to be "extra" careful and after the detail job, try to remove splatter off of trim.

On this Magnum I buffed out you can see where I taped-off

  • Smooth rubber trim
  • Smooth plastic trim
  • Pebble textured plastic trim

Thankfully there wasn't a lot of trim to tape-off but most of it was creamed out by all the detailers that have worked on the car before me and I certainly wasn't going to add to it.

Yup thats the deal i got...$20! Might try it out tonight :)...I called the sears near me first and they said 'oh yeah if you bring in the print out we'll match the price...absoluely!''

hah..yeah right..i get there and then i hear 'oh well that was an xmas day sale and we had some leftovers and thats why its an online sale...so uh the ones we have in stock are the same ones but its not the same deal...' morons...anyway i just ordered online and got the fast shipping so i got it in 3 days...signed up for sears' free 30 day shipping deal where you get free shipping or $1 express shipping...and then after 30 days they hit your card for $80 annual fee for that deal to continue...of course i'll be canceling before then :)
