Ok so my PC has slowy stop working on lower speeds and now only runs on speed 6 and will not even turn on at any speed lower then that. I was an Aviation Electronics tech in the Navy so i may know a wee bit about electrical thingamagigs so i have decided that its the speed control switch. I found one for $11.50 but i have no idea how hard these things are to change. Has anyone done anything like this before? Should i even attempt it or should i just bite the bullet and get another because this thing is how i make my money if it goes out im screwed so i need a solution fast before it gets any worse. I have my trusty makita but i use my PC the most and im not sure how long i can go without one at work.

I'd ask the AG folks for their thoughts before you crack it open. They may have some thoughts about what's wrong and what to do about it.

Failing that, look for a Porter Cable / DeWalt service center in your area. They were always great with nail guns, etc., Couple days and good as new.

Ya i thought about a service center but the problem is that i dont have a back up and i use it every day during the week for work i think im just gonna get a GG its time i guess even thoguh i wanted my next DA to be a flex but i just cant swing the money ATM

You could take some pics if you take her apart for the rest of us. Not sure what kind of speed control the PC uses, but perhaps it's a variable resistor or some sort thats burned out or has a contact problem. That's great that you found a replacement part; im kinda surprised.

I found it on the porter cable website :
Detail

I am gonna do it i just ordered the part but im also gonna get a GG i guess.
I will post up a how too when im done if it works :P

I wouldn't get a GG unless you can't fix it. If you can fix it and save enough money to get the Flex you want that would be great!

I know this post is old, but would like to know if, by replacing this speed control switch fixed the problem. I hate it when a post goes dead without any follow up. My PC is doing the same thing and will be replacing the part. Certainly would be nice to know before hand if it was the speed control.

OK... my 7424xp was getting to the point where it would not run at lower speeds, and then it would just cut off. If I let it set for a bit then it would kick back on, but only for a few seconds. Replaced the Speed control switch and it seems to be running fine now. I haven't taken out for an actual test drive yet.

These aren't all that hard to replace, at least on the 1st generation Porter Cable 7424....

Glad it worked out for you! :props:

lol droped my pc and did the same thing put new one in and was good to go. I drop my makita all the time and never stops
