PC on Classics?

I have a 1961 Mercury Comet and was wondering if the porter-cable would be too harsh for the classic paint? Any help would be nice.
 
I know more than a couple that use ROB's on classic and show cars.
 
ROB's -- Random Orbital Buffers like PC, UDM, Flex and Cyclo
 
Thats a great question. I'm glad you asked. I hope to have a chance soon to detail a friend's MGB. I figured using a PC/ UDM would be okay but I'm glad to get an answer.

Are there any "don't do" for single stage paints?
 
pc may be to easy on the paint. if that is the original paint it was put through alot worse than what a pc will do. back in those days the paint that was used LOVED heat. so when cars were buffed out it was very common to hear a rotary buffer running at around 2500rpm's. paint was thicker back then and if i remember laid on with more coats than they do now.
 
Cool. That helps a lot. By the way what was that "MGB" that reddwarf mentioned? So are you saying 2500rpm's and higher will be fine for the paint? What polishes, sealents, pre-waxes, or waxes might you recommend. Sorry, I havn't found much helo in that department.

i would never advise anyone to run a buffer at 2500rpm's i been buffing cars for over 15 years and will only goto 1800 at very most. 1500rpm's it the highest most people go.

is the paint clear coated? single stage?

i have heard meguires polishes are great on single stage paint.

as for waxes

depends on what you want. do you long lasting or deep wet shine or deep reflection. a few you cant go wrong with would be souveran, sig series II, max wax, natty's, collinite
 
Oprandi, nice to see another old Ford/Mercury on this site, i have a 1963 Ford Fairlane (repainted) and i use the PC on mine and also i have tried it alittle bit on my dad 1964 Fairland wagon with the orginal paint, but only on low setting and light cutting pad. When i use the PC on my car i usually use Menzerna SIP with a 6in. yellow/orange Edge pad (the clear coat is alittle hard) and it makes the paint look stunning. I just recently got some 4in. pads and those really seemed to knock out most of the swirls that i was not able to get out with the 6in. pad. For waxes you can never go wrong with souveran and i just got Poli-Seal, so i have not been able to try that out, but heard it works great.

Here is a post I did a while back with the process and products used on the car. In the first picture you really can't tell that there were swirls because of the lighting and the camera i used, but they were light to medium swirls on it. Hope this can help you out.

FWIW I've used the Pinnacle polish with a Porter Cable on our old 1940 Buick with ~30 year old single stage BLACK paint, with fantastic results. :cheers:
 
cool guys. that helps a lot. i think i am going to get the PC 7424 & pad kit. was the Yellow Edge just the pad you used? by hand? and what is SIP?
 
oh ok. got it. yeah, i think mine is single stage paint.
