Bare with a Noob here. Way back during the last PC promotion I bought a PC7424XP and a pad starter kit. It's getting warm enough here in PA to try my hand at my first polishing job. I unpack everything and find that I have a backing plate which measures about 4 3/4" and the pads that I got are LC 6.5"!!!! Question - can I use the 6.5" pads with the smaller backing plate? Should I just buy new 5.5" pads which is certainly what I will do in the future.

2 more questions. How many pads do you need to polish very light swirls out on a SUV? Car is one year old, only been washed by hand and the paint is in great shape. I am assuming you do not use one pad for the entire car but change out to fresh pads periodically - how often? And finally, what pads do you recommend for using by hand for the spots the PC can't reach easily.

Today

Yes, you can use this backing plate with both 5 1/2" and 6 1/2" diameter pads. When using 5 1/2" pads be sure that they're centered over the backing plate to ensure no accidental contact with the finish occurs.

Future

In the future you'd be better off using the 5 1/2" diameter pads.

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax

Lake Country Pads

  • Orange - 2
  • White - 3
  • Gray - 3
  • Blue - 2
You can use a terrycloth towel to clean your pads on the fly so use the pads until you think it's time to switich to a clean one.

Lake Country makes small hand applicator pads with the same foam as they polishing pads so order as many as you think you'll need.
