Wonder if it is normal for this unit to run hot?
Im not using the handle and it gets too hot to hold and smells.

This is really the first time I am using it other than when I turned it on when I first got it, to make sure it worked.

Using a white pad.

Maybe I should call rather than post cause this may not be fair to the PC7424 with a first time user.

Perfectly normal to get a little hot. Smell too. I know what smell your talking about, hard to explain, kinda electrical, greasy, hot smell right?

found that out too...smell does worry me and have had to use side handle as the front gets way to hot to hold. hopefully the makita i just bought doesn't have the same issues...

mine does this also, no biggie for me though. just use the handle. :)

Got the infra red thermometer out and was surprised to find much of the body running at 140-150F and some parts on the underside way higher 160-170F as much as 182F.

The thermometer is calibrated and correct.
Also, the air conditioned garage temperature is 75F.

What gauge extension cord are you using, this plays a big role in on how hot the pc gets.

25 ft, 16 gauge. probably should look for a 12 gauge but never had the heat problem before using the cord listed above

just for grins, what is the recommended extension cord gauge and length for either a pc or makita? do need a 25 footer though.

this is exactly what i was thinking.

OP, also, as brushes break in on the commutator of the motor, and the rotating assembly generally breaks in, you might have some heat from all of that, but yeah, def review your cord gauge.

i use a diesel 10 awg Ridgid cord for both my PC and my makita...and pretty much everything else with any sort of draw around my house ; )

excellent. thank you. learn something every day on here.

Run same cord as with table saw etc.
At 182F outside body, the first thing I thought was that poor commutator, and how long till the brushes need replaced.

I use a 12 gauge Rigid cord. Also using alot of pressure will cause excessive heat, so becareful on how pressure you are using to to correct paint.
