Hey everyone, I just got my porter cable any ready to use it tomorrow!

I need a 50 ft extension cord, I may be able to get by with a 25ft but wanted to make sure I get the correct cord. I went tonight and bought a 14g 50ft 15a 15.2m contractor cord from Lowes. I was up in the air about the 25ft 12g and the 14g 50ft. I went with the 14g and wanted to make sure before I use it and open it if that was acceptable for the PC?

I'll be using it for a long period of time since I'm about to do a swirl removal, polish and wax stage with it.

Thank you for all the help in advance!

I'll only say, when in doubt-go big.

Gonna do a bit of a rant...I truly believe all the various charts that show 'this amperage' vs 'this length' are the minimums that will work. I'm not referring to something 6 feet long or so, but when ya get in to the 25' and longer. ...rant over.

Just my 2¢.

I always use a 12 gauge, even thinking about picking up a 10 gauge for some equipment. From what I've been told, you either want the same gauge or better than the equipment your going to use. I rather go bigger than smaller.

You should have bought the 7424 with the longer cord attached. That's what I did.

I have a dedicated 12g for my 7424XP. A 14g MAY work for 25 ft, but for a 50 ft, I think 12g would be better. But I'm no expert on electricity.

Purchased a 100 ft./ 12 gauge from Costco 6-8 months ago. They may still have them.

Hope this helps.

14 AWG would work but if you are getting extension cords get 12 AWG. They provide more options for high current devices - long distances, less voltage drop..helps save motors.

Well, I went first thing this morning and exchanged it for a 12g 50ft. I have Mikes new book and came across a section that he also suggest using a 12g for anything over 25ft so that's what I did.

Thanks for all the responses!

Work yesterday and today with the PC, did the swirl removal yesterday and finishing polish today. With my 50ft 12g cord my PC worked like a dream, never really got hot and was a pleasure to work with.

Now tomorrow the wax!

are you sure you don't have this backwards. The smaller number is a higher gauge.
