Ok guys and gals,
Been a while since I have been on here. Family changes, new baby, etc. Anyways onto my question:

My wife has a new Sonata that I try to detail every now and then as I have time, but my new to me ride is a 2002 white Silverado. It had the typical peeling clear on the hood and roof when I purchased it, but the Xterra I got rid of had its paint issues as well. Now, it is a daily driver and not meant to be perfect so I figure I can keep the Sonata perfect and the truck presentable.

My first thought was to partake in a few local Maaco shop’s black Friday deals, but thought better of it. Not only does prepping the hood and roof cost just as much as the paint would have, I think I would be more happy with what is left of my current factory paint. So now my current plan is to purchase a nice used hood, and repaint the roof with white rustoleum for protection. Should be able to get somewhat of a shine from it, and being on the roof of the truck, the color difference wouldn’t be too noticeable but to me and the fine people on this forum (still better than sticking up clearcoat).

I picked up a nice hood Friday, and plan to paint the roof after Christmas. My only immediate concern is the driver side doors above the front and extended cab windows. The clear is very slowly peeling there as well, and my hopes are that I can save it. I have some 2K clear in a spray can coming. My original intent was to wet sand before spraying, but I am worried about more water/condensation getting under the edge of the clear and causing more to peel up before or after the clear is sprayed.

My current thought is that 3000 grit dry would be the best approach. I know it won’t be perfect, but it will have protection.

Any different thoughts? :thankyousign:

Also, I know this isn't the desired fix, just trying to keep protection on the truck while making it look presentable as cheap as possible. Depending on if I have the truck in the next 2 years or so will determine if I do a full decent paint job or not.

Thanks

What is the budget for your project?

Is a "Smart Repair" an option at $200?

Dry sanding with 3000 will not work very well.
The paper will clog almost immediately

A vehicle that is soon to be 13 years old requires some serious thought as to its total value. Is it worth all this work/paint/whatever? I think not. Sounds to me like you are pissing off good money for nothing but only you can determine that. For me it would not be worth it ...........your call.

Go by CarMax and ask them what the vehicle is worth as is and then ask the value if you paint the roof with Rustoleum

You may actually depreciate the vehicle further
