A couple weeks back we received an email from an owner who said he had been pretty lazy the past year with his washing. He admitted his paint was in pretty bad shape and knew it would take some doing to revive it. There was really no talk about pricing and such, he just wanted it DONE - so we set a date to DO it!

Of course brilliant black on Audi's is notorious for being a pain to cut into and even more difficult to finish down - that being the case - we figured CQuartz Finest would really help the owner in being able to maintain the finish without having to worrying about swirling the crap out of it just by looking at it!

Here she is...

She was a very sexy looking car...the wheels really made it stand out...and where most would see a swirled mess...we saw a huge opportunity to really show off our skills.

But, it was not going to be a walk in the park...

He was not exaggerating about the condition of his paint...it needed a LOT of help...

The more we looked, the more painful it got.

The bumper REALLY hurt....

The trunk was...special:

Roof:

Wheel barrels had a pile of break dust on them...literally...it was pretty ugly:

Lug nuts were bad as well...wheel faces weren't horrible, just the tight spots:

Door jambs were pretty funky too:

Some areas of the paint were just wicked looking as far as the swirls go:

It was a job, no doubt about that. So, it was time to being...wheels and tires first...what do we do about that nasty break dust....we melt that crap off:

Into the purple abyss we go...get it wheel woolie!

Cut right through it like a hot knife through butter:

Hey look, its actually metal color:

Tips were...yeah...um we'll just come back to that later:

Gas chamber was pretty dirty:

For now, it was time for a foam bath...break that dirt down and get it washed, clayed and prepped:

The water was running VERY flat! No protection left on this baby!

We included a quick interior for him as well - even our "quick" interior is fairly detailed:

Now time for the fun part, examining the paint under LED:

Some we knew right away were too deep down to go after, but we'd do our best to make them look better:

But the rest of these guys were ours for the taking...we'd deal with them via Rupes power

Painnnnn!

That was a shot of the rear quarter...dani was on that side checking it out and all she said was "Oh my God!" I asked what....and she replied "It looks like a dog got to this panel with sand paper!" I said "A dog?" She said "Yeah cause it looks like his nails dug into the paint along with the sand paper!"

I went around to look and couldnt help but agree lol

So it was time to get to work, rupes, M101 and M105 were going to be doing the heavy lifting again...technique and keeping the pad clean were vital in dealing with this paint...trying to keep marring to a minimum so that this baby soft clear didn't end up being a pain to polish down with our 2nd step.

I taped down the middle of the drivers door and got a couple of nice 50/50 shots....the correction was nice...but there was pitting everywhere on this poor car...luckily it didn't show as much in sunlight as it did under LED, but still...even with that...the paint was coming out very nicely:

Bam! There it is

Eventually i made it around to the dog/sandpaper panel *sigh*, this took some doing...plenty of 101...slow passes and patience were my weapons lol.

Turned into:

Final polishing still needed to be done, if you look closely you can see a couple little straight lined towel marks on the left part, very faint and cleaned up easily with HD polish, but it just goes to show how SOFT this paint was. It ALSO showed just how well megs compounds can finish down - even on the big throw of the rupes 21 - you can still get your compound to finish down quite nicely and it leaves little to have to clean up later on.

Before:

And then a more complete view of the quarter.

I also did a 50/50 of that quarter, which showed what a huge transition had taken place:

A super close up showed the very faint towel marring left after wiping away compound...gotta really have your eyes focused to see this stuff:

Tail lights need polishing too...yes my light looks silly but it sure helps to be able to see the progress im making:

Some pretty bad water spotting along with swirls...nice combo:

Dani was workin the 4" pad in the tight areas...

The compounding was complete that night, we re-washed it, dried it and allowed it to sit over night - by the time day 2 came around we were up and working in some final polish to really gloss this baby up!

Dani saw the logo on the window right away and said "Thats a HoneyBadger! Honey Badger don't care!!"

Even the stupidly low and small areas got polishes...these were pretty beat up looking but we still made a nice improvement on them:

Finally it was time to prep for CQuartz Finest..wheels had already been coated and were covered...dani's "Wheel bonnets" lol

While i prepped the paint for Finest, Dani worked on the plastic ....making it look real nice with CQuartz Dlux:

Left side done, right side not:

Both sides complete, unfortunately it doesnt repair rock chip damage! But it still looked a hell of a lot better!

The weather stripping along the windshield was very faded and grey looking, even though it was only 2 years old:

Dlux however, managed to bring it back quite nicely...

50/50 shot, top part of the strip is undone, bottom part is done:

In the mean time i was laying down a nice thick, glossy coat of Finest:

Setting....

Every inch gets coated...twice...

After removing the 2nd coat....we applied Flyby30 to the glass...and then pulled this bad boy out! Time for some sun shots!

Black and beautiful:

Swirls were gone:

Pitting was not lol...hey im a polisher not a painter...

Wheels and tires looked awesome, coated, sexy:

Finest gives some of the most bad *** reflection shots ever...the depth it gives to black especially is unreal:

There she isssss!

This was one awesome looking S5 - wearing Finest and the Windows and Wheels badge proudly

Trunk was MUCH better:

Those horrible tips looked shiny as hell now:

I managed to capture the reflection of 6 suns in just the corner of the quarter panel, pretty good huh

Further back:

Blackness:

While i was shooting a video of the finished product, our neighbor came out and was saying "You've got to be kidding me, is this a joke...thats my dream car!" Sweet!

And finally...

Its results like this that make me want a black car....its just the damn "before" photos that keep me from getting one!

End result = very pleased owner and very glossy, black and protected paint.

The more i use Finest, the more i love it. The ease of use, the end result and the solid protection are all huge pluses in my book.

I did shoot a video showing the before and after condition of the paint...check it out if you have time...i think it was pretty good

Thanks all for reading!

Great job as always. I always love seeing your thread because you have a billion pictures and shots of you two working. :dblthumb2:

You two always manage to out-do yourselves every time you post a turnaround like this, that car looks amazing! How much time total was spent on this job?

Great work, as usual!
That puppy has been driven through or parked in some serious dust storms! The pitting seems to be on every surface.

Your two mentions of soft paint were obviously not a typo:

"...trying to keep marring to a minimum so that this baby soft clear didn't end up being a pain to polish down with our 2nd step."

"...but it just goes to show how SOFT this paint was."

so that would be the first I've heard Audi paint called soft. I wonder if Audi (like BMW) uses different/soft clear on black, or maybe the millions of pits (which are obviously pretty deep since they didn't correct) expose a lot of "dead" clearcoat around each pit and that makes the cutting easier overall and is what was clogging the pad and contributing to the marring?
In any case, verrrry interesting.

Lol yeah we try to get quite a few in there...we did a Tesla last week and i went to upload the pics and i was like...damn...i only took 40something! We were in a bit of a rush though, owner had driven over 100 miles to get it to us and needed to get it charged and head back up so time was of the essence - still will make a decent write up though :)

Hmm good question, im thinking between the two of us we put in a solid 25-30 hours between the two days. We worked pretty much straight through the first day till night fall and then hit it early the next morning and finished around 4ish if i remember correctly.

Great work, awesome! And excellent post.

Thank you!

From what ive always hear about BLACK audi paint, Brilliant black to be specific, is its hard to cut and even more difficult to polish because it towel mars so easily. I know im not the only one who has had that experience with black audi paint...others ive talked to say DONT coat it cause its a damn headache to do lol.

The pitting really was EVERYWHERE...it was insane...of course the front was worse than the rest but, not 1 panel was absent of the pitting to some degree. As for the marring i think some of it has to do with when you wipe the compound away, you're building up abrasives in the towel and i think that the build up causes small 'clumps' and helps to mar the paint. I notice it much less when fine polishing, but i do still have to be careful ...even the sewn edge of a very soft towel can still cause light marring - its VERY faint and it only takes a quick hit with the polish to correct those types of defects, but they can be very time consuming to have to continuously chase if you're careless!

Great work Will. As usual, best write ups and pictures period. I might have to give a try on that M101. Keep up the amazing work guys.

Nice work! I'm curious to know what wheel cleaner you were using? I've been using sonax full effect but the scent is aweful. Bought ammo too but the price point isnt business friendly right now...

Nice work :dblthumb2: I think its really cool that you have a spouse who enjoys detailing as much as you do. I gotta find someone like that! My personal car (its black too) has bad pitting/rock chips. Its a shame. I have driven cross country quite a bit. I keep the car in good shape but the pitting is on the hood, front bumper, side fenders, even the side door panels. Maybe one day I'll repaint the front end but paint correction shows the true defects of the paint.

Great work, as always! I'm sure the owner will appreciate the fact that he now has the "finest" looking S5 on the block (and possibly the whole city).

I have used Sonax, Wolf'a Gel and many others, the good ones that changes the color to purple, they all smell terrible. I usually use a nose mask, just in case.

Beautiful work as always with some tremendous results. How long did the job take from start to finish? Great work once again.

Nice work guys! You saved that beautiful S5 :xyxthumbs:

Thanks Davey :) She looks pretty good now :dblthumb2:

You gotta get some M101, autoailty/detailers club has it at a great price most times....i kinda feel like the most interesting man in the world...."I don't always use super aggressive and expensive compound - but when i do - I prefer M101"

Life would suck without it on jobs like this...thats all i can say. Im sure i coulda kicked on a MF pad and 105 and been fine, but it wouldn't have finished down as nicely or removed as easily. M100 is worth a shot too.

Brian - that was 1Z Colour Tech wheel cleaner...it smells gross too....just so you know...kinda like iron-x....but its cheaper than iron-x and IMO (from the testing i did) it cleans better than the sonax. Just did a pretty nasty 4-runner this past weekend and while i had to use wheel woolies to help break down the grime in the barrels - i was able to just spray the faces, let set and then pressure wash them clean..no agitation needed except around the lug nuts.

She's my sister...don't worry, i get that all the time lol

Black loves to show its pitting...i honestly kinda wonder if a car had been coated from the get-go - if it would have resisted or lessened the pitting...im not sure if anyone has done any testing like that yet or not.

Hahaha, sure hope so - we put a lot of work into it but he seemed happy with it all, thats for sure.

This one i think took between 25-30 hours (combining both my and Dani's hours) - i honestly didn't watch the clock as closely on this one - but i think thats a pretty close estimate.

Another awsome turnaround Wills......good to see Dani doing a litttle more work LOL j/k Dani.

Great job guys!

Yeah M100 I have but I don't like it that much but this week I will be getting some M101 for sure. Great job once again bud.

Beautiful results as usual, always enjoy your write-ups.

Give the girl some room when working on the rear bumper!! LOL!
