Picked up new car. Newbie needs advice..!

Another great post Mark, thank you very much! And yes, the weather will be taking a turn for the worse soon enough. It's been nice and warm for the past week and even the next week or so, but I'm not counting on it....

Planning to prep this baby for the winter ASAP.

Now the colour on the vehicle is called "Cosmic Grey Mica". It has a shiny dark green tinge to it in sunlight but otherwise appears blackish-green.

Shane, if roughness is felt when doing the baggie test, then yes, claying should be done.

Claying will be then a "minimum" cure for such roughness felt. The roughness is of course contaminants that are stuck-bonded to the paint's surface. The contaminants can be a host of things, fallout, iron particles, tree sap, paint overspray, and there's probably some others.

Iron particles can be like a sliver in your finger. some of it protrudes, and some is actually imbedded down into the paint, and is imbedded below the paint surface.

Claying will remove iron particulates to a degree, maybe very well, and then again, maybe not so well? Claying is then said to "shave" the iron off the surface, but still not completely get iron particles that are imbedded further into the paint finish.

This is where products like Carpro Iron X will more effectively remove iron, both at the surface, and below the surface, which is imbedded in the paint.

It is said, that Iron eventually corrodes-eats at a paint finish, the longer it is left on-in the paint, it then begins to permanently "pit", and erode the finish.

I've used Iron-X last year on my '97 Tahoe pictured in my avatar. I was pretty amazed-shocked to see the amount of Iron that was on-in the paint.

I recommend using XMT 360. It's all in one. Cleaner, polish sealant. Outstanding end result. Directions on ag says you don't have to clay but I do anyway.

Your Paint shine is going to come from the prep work you do to your car. So I strongly recommend to clay your ride followed up with a abrasive polish. Then seal it with your favorite wax.

the 476 last longer then the 845, but I hate applying paste. I like to use the Liquid wax of any wax because I own a Dual Action polisher.
