Picked up some used wheels, I don't think they've ever been cleaned...

I picked up a set of used wheels for my Volvo, fully knowing they're not in amazing shape or anything. Eventually, I want to get them refinished, but that just isn't in the cards right now. So, my question is, what can I use to clean these wheels up for the time being? I got them off a car that has been in a junkyard for who knows how long. I've tried a couple of the different wheel cleaners I currently have, but all stuff from the local auto parts store, and while they help some, I feel the results could be much better. I'm not really sure what the finish is in these wheels, I believe just painted though.

What can I use to further clean them up until I can refinish them?

Megs Wheel Brightner should take care of that caked on brake dust. Just make sure you follow the directions.

Agreed, and you many need to clay them as well. Im willing to bet a lot of that will be stained so it may not come completely clean.

I figured I won't be able to get all of it off, but if I can make it look better than it looks now, I'll be happy!
 
i would say some iron X paste and alot of elbow grease. i dont think there is a detail store near you that would stock it but check some paint suppliers, call them up and ask if they carry the meguiars detailer line. be careful with the wheel bright if you find some.those will take some elbow grease and probably will need to be polished with a power ball or a dyna cone using some polish thats suited for paint(stuff you use on you ride is fine) they will take some work but they are some good looking wheels.

Wheel Cleaners and Polishes
Amazing results. I use a 4:1 mixture with a Daytona speed brush. Works fast and is easy. Plus the Brown Royal isn't corrosive like store bought wheel cleaners
