Edit: Pics have been added in this post as well as the 9th post which is a picture of using a polisher and a light abrasive compound.

Note:
I live on a dirt road, so my truck is almost always covered in dust.

I had my truck wrapped last year using either 3M or Avery wrap (I can’t recall which brand exactly). The shop that did the work claimed they applied a ceramic coating, but I’m starting to doubt that. The dirt seems to have baked into the wrap.

I recently had it detailed by a local shop (I'm a bit lazy, though I do have my own cleaning supplies – sometimes it's just easier to pay someone else). They did a pre-rinse, used a foam cannon twice, and did a rinse-less wash, but none of that removed the dirt that looks like it’s been embedded into the wrap. Even the glass seems to have the same issue, with what looks like paint embedded into it. I’m starting to wonder if it could be hard water stains, as my neighbor irrigates his field, and occasionally my truck gets sprayed when I pass by.

We tried using Iron X remover (Adams Brand) and a clay mitt, but that didn’t help – and the clay mitt actually scratched the wrap. I then asked the detailer to try a light cutting compound with an orbital buffer, which seemed to improve things a bit, but I'm not sure if that’s the right approach, since it’s a vinyl wrap, not painted. It's almost as if it's covered in an ashy film of dirt.

Does anyone have recommendations for cleaners that could help with this?

Is the "dirt" a uniform film on everything? Or is it small pinpoint spots, or the size of water drops (as you suggest with the water spotting analogy)?

Uniform film across the entire wrap, but some areas are worse then other.

When the detailer polished, did it affect the "satin" appearance? Does that area look different? If so, are you ok with that? Because you can polish PPF, at least the clear, I guess you can polish colored.

It did make an improvement, gave it the original luster it use to have (maybe slightly shinier). It's not PPF though, it's a standard vinyl wrap. I wish I would have done PPF but the cost was nearly double.

Where is ChefWong when you need him? I don't really know too much about this, was just trying to get some clarification from you so it would be easier to help. Seems like a more potent cleaner might be in order.

I’d get some pictures up. I don’t really have much to offer here, but I’m certainly interested.

Sounds like you need a vinyl restoration product...Cerakote wipes or Griots

This is a pic after a buffer/polisher was used with a light abrasive compound.

Yeah that looks exactly as described. Hard to tell if it’s from water spotting, as that certainly exists on it, or if it’s from dirt also embedding into it.

Does the shop that did the wrap know what it is?

Shop blamed lack of washing the cause. Keep in mind this started within the first two months of having it wrapped. Guessing he’s didn’t ceramic coat it as he claimed and the dirt dried onto the vinyl and needs a heavy duty cleaner to remove it or buffing it out if it’s safe enough to do to vinyl.

It does? I can't seen anything you are describing, just an orange-peely looking surface. I don't see water spots or dirt.

I had a matt anthracite hood wrap on my FJ Cruiser, it also got staining that was a combination of water marks and mud baking in to the vinyl. From memory it was 3M, it took about 18 months before it became very obvious. The guy that did the install said that I should use a spray wax on it, even though common practise was to not use any wax on it at all, he also told me to wash and contaminants off it as soon as I could, as they would stain it. Unfortunately the FJ has no under hood insulation, so if I went off road and got mud on it, it would be baked on before I could get anywhere where I could wash it off. I removed it at about the 3 year mark, it took about 6-7 hours all up, it was a very tedious process, it had basically been baked to metal. A trim restorer like 303 Aerospace Protectant would make it look good again, but only till it got wet, then it would all wash off. Sorry I don't have an answer for you. This picture below I sent to the installer just before I removed it, his response was, "You got 3 years out of it, that's not too bad, vinyl wrap only comes with a 12 month warranty, and that's only on vertical surfaces". So horizontal surfaces like the hood basically don't have a warranty. I guess I didn't hear that bit, but it wouldn't have stopped me.PSX_20250310_144824.jpg

Looks like hard water stains, or excess heat has got to it.
