Playing with my new Nikon D40

Thanks for the advice! What photo-editing programs are you all using. I have PhotoImpact 8, but wasn't sure if there is better out there.

but if you have an Apple, iPhoto actually has some pretty incredible adjustment settings built in... I can correct 90% of my problems within iPhoto much quicker than in CS3.
 
Sometimes you have to watch out when taking closeups!

So since I'm quite the newbie as well, how does one fix an "underexposed" picture?
 
Photoshop.

P1et- brightness and contrast. Theres also more advanced ways. You just need to learn your light meter on the camera. Even though it might be set up at 0, the picture could still come out over or underexposed.
