Please Be Kind - I'm Stressed Enough

Central Maine? Hope you're working inside, pj! ;)

Your process looks sound. Like with all of us though, you can read & read & read some more, but nothing takes the place of actually doing it.

What you will find though, is that you'll have the hang of it in no time.

Good luck, brother. :)

Working in a heated garage fortunately

As etnops stated, Wolfgang TSR will work well on that paint. Ive used it on many Tornado red Vdubs man with the 3401. Start at Speed 4 with the orange pad and work for a few passes then slow down. Then you may just need to buzz over it with the white pad and TSR if you don't have anything finer.

A word of caution....this is a big undertaking. If you get frustrated...walk away for a few minutes and clear your head. Don`t rush yourself either. And most of all.....have some fun man!!!!

I will say you have come to a great place; this is a friendly and helpful forum. I, like many here, was once in your shoes. I am now doing this regularly on customer cars lol.

Just to reiterate what some have said already: If you can get the job with Total Swirl Remover on a orange pad great! Ideally but especially if you do anything more aggressive and being your first time you will want to follow up with a finishing polish. If you are in a bind and determined to do this tomorrow, run to Walmart and grab some Meguiars Ultimate Polish. It is a similar consumer version of M205 (M105 two step companion).

Also M105 from what I hear isn't easy to work with for novices. Not to scare you or anything as such. But I do feel it is a good segway to ask how many pads are you going with? How many you think is enough, often leaves us in hindsight thinking "I should have bought more". Small section passes especially in compounding. Total Swirl Remover has a long working time, take advantage of that. ... This may help keep you away from using M105 and help make Total Swirl Remover an acceptable one step.

PM if you feel uncomfortable still. If I am free tomorrow I'll be happy to guide you through any frustrations.

Thanks for the encouragement, Rod. I have six orange pads. Planning on one for hood and top (2/3 of top is sunroof), one for hatch, one for doors, one for front fenders. I also have a Griots Garage mini for mirrors and bumpers/small places.

You're going to be fine, pj.

I remember my trepidation diving into the machine polisher process. About 1 minute into it, I thought of all the guys that said "You're going to be fine" and smiled. Lol

''do not get iron x on your headlights, it will take off the uv clear coat'' =)

So tomorrow I'm going to be detailing my two month old 2016 Tornado Red GTI for the first time. I am a hobby detailer, not a pro. I have literally scoured forums, the internet through Google searches, and YouTube vids trying to come up with a plan. Would you guys/gals check out the plan and tell me if something is missing or it looks good .... kindly, please.

Below is the plan. I will be working with a Flex XC 3401 DA with 5.5" Lake & Country pads:

GTI DETAIL

Wash
Iron X
Foam gun
Clay
Wipe with paint prep
Test spot
***wolfgang tsr 3.0 w/ LC orange pad
***doesnt work - M105 with LC white pad
***doesnt work - M105 with LC orange pad
Ultima Paint Guard Plus (new formula)
Pinnacle Sig Series II carnauba

So fire away ......

Sounds like a good plan ,but after all that work I would go with a more solid lsp.

I've used Iron-X and other fallout removers and have never heard of this happening. Do you have any photos of this happening?

Things are going well! Finishing up tomorrow! Don't know how you guys do this stuff every single day. Six hours work today. Probably another four tomorrow. But I'm having fun. Orange pad with Wolfgang TSR.

Sorry the pictures aren't better. The last one is the test spot. Wish the pic was better.

So I need suggestions on an LSP

Wow! Looking real nice. :dblthumb2: What did you go with in the end? As far as an LSP, what have you got available? Is there a store nearby that you can purchase from? Are you looking for long term protection, a visual impact type LSP, a bit of both or maybe even a coating? The Pinnacle you have listed will be great though.

Its looking fantastic though, you should be happy with the results.

Wolfgang TSR with an orange pad. Tried a white pad and it didn't quite get the job done. I'm very pleased with the results!

I found some Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze I forgot I had. Thinking I'll use that. I wish I had the Klasse All In One Polish to put on before. I'm in Maine, so no stores that carry much in detailing products. If I put one coat of Klasse Glaze on, let it cure, and then put a coat of Pinnacle on top, do you know if I can come back in the spring a put another coat of Klasse on or will the carnauba prevent it from adhering?

Ha, I'm in New Zealand - so I'm even further from any car care shops, hence I just blew all my pocket money on an order from Autogeek & the 25% off sale! I've decided I'll just be poor forever.

I haven't any experience with Klasse products so I can't give you any real world advice but I will say, you did go the better route as far as the results you achieved by using the Wolfgang TSR as apposed to the Klasse AIO. AIO products are fine but not really intended to get the results that you got using TSR.

Spring for you is what, a couple of months away? Is the GTi a daily driver or a weekend toy? How often do you wash, the elements etc will depend on how long the Wax will last & possibly by the time spring rolls around you may find you need to do some polishing work again. You nailed it this time though, so i'll be a peice of cake next time. :props:

You will not be disappointed with Signature Series II.....used it over Meguiars Ultimate Wax (sealant) on my daughters car....came out great

I've always wanted to go to your part of the world!

GTI is a daily driver. Planning to do a rinseless wash once a week minimum. Spring is April-May, so 2-3 months away. The next buff won't be nearly as intense since I'm doing a proper job this time around. I can really see the rough shape the paint was in now that I can compare a polished panel next to an unpolished panel. Wow! What a mess!

Autogeek gets a chunk of my hard-earned $$$ a couple times a year. We may be cash poor, but our rides look good!!!

Come & see us anytime! :xyxthumbs: We are still a bit beat up from the earthquake in November just down the road here but we still have the Kiwi "she'll be right" attitude.

Yep spot on! Take your time with your wash routine & come spring, the work will be minimal to make that GTi like new again. Maybe apply a coat of Pinnacle a couple of three times in between now & spring too - just to keep a good layer of protection on there.

Can't wait to see some pics of the GTi in all it's glory. :dblthumb2:

What a great job correcting that paint, pj. You are officially "hooked" now. Lol
