There seems to be some debate over whether Dawn will strip LSP. I'm too new to this to have an opinion, but I do have a question. Last Fall I washed my vehicle in Dawn as there were several layers of carnauba. I then applied a sealant and went the entire winter with no maintenance. In the spring, the paint was near perfect and beaded very well. Obviously, the sealant bonded. Does this mean that:

1. The Dawn stripped the carnauba?
or
2. The sealant bonded over the carnauba?

#1 seems to be in questions these days and #2 seems to be impossible according to this forum. Is there real proof that sealants wont bond over other products? Could it depend more on the type of sealant used? Is there proof that one sealant won't bond over another?

Proof? You want "bonding-proof"?!?! You can't handle the proof!! ~ Thack Nitholthon

I wonder:
What type of bonding, if any, happens when the auto-wax has some synthetic-wax/sealant in it (many do)...
and the sealant you're going to apply on top of it has had a little bit of a natural wax put in it (many do). :dunno:

For my "proof of bonding" of/between different-LSP's to auto-paint, and/or to each other...
I simply just go ahead and follow their recommended:
Application/removal/drying/curing/"layering" directions from their manufacturers.

Makes it one more thing in Life to not have to fuss around with.

-Or I suppose a person could just go by what seems to be the accepted
practice formed by the consensus of auto-detailing-forums' members:
Waxes go atop sealants.

I am by no means, a pro or expert, but I find a dawn wash does not strip all of my existing sealant/wax off my cars. I still see beading after I was even with a dawn/apc mix. Two things I found that do seem to work is wash with dawn, and spay car with full strength APC (and you'll see it melt off the car) or use Dodo Juice Road Grime Remover (it does the same thing).
*plunks down my two cents worth*

Don't leave out the claying step in all of this. A strip wash, of any kind, should be followed by clay before sealant or LSP, in my opinion.

Sealant has to be applied to clean paint to bond to the paint.
