I recently started detailing my own car. My wife bless her for being supportive bought me a foam spray for the wheels. Unfortunately I did not test it first before using it on all my wheels. While I did wash it off straight away, I did not notice the damage until I was in the drying process. Is there anything I can do personally to correct this damage? I think the foam spray has taken a layer off the wheels but I am not sure.

Thank you in advance.

What sort of wheel cleaner was it?

Unfortunately, leaving them on too long is a common mistake for powerful wheel cleaners.

It is an obscure brand that is not known. I only used it because it was a gift from the wife. All my other products are ones which have been positively review here. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a costly mistake :(

You can check the MSDS of the product you used and determine if it was overly acidic or caustic. It looks like it etched into the wheels. Perhaps it was left to dwell for too long?

You need to balance the pH of the surface to stop the etching from getting worse. I would rewash the wheels with a pH neutral soap and rinse very, very well. Then dry thoroughly and see how they look. If the etching is really bad you might be able to polish them back to life with some metal polish. Are these uncoated aluminum?

Wheel may have been previously repaired.
Hit or miss options for turn around.
Bathroom cleaners are for the bath.
Can't turn a pickle back into a cucumber.

The only thing you can do is to try and polish it out. No need to use metal polish, as those wheels are clear coated just like the paint on the rest of the car. It will quickly become evident if its able to be removed. My guess would be if you polish it aggressively enough you will be able to remove most of it.

Stick to wheel cleaners that work by surfactant (soap) technology.

Glad I don't have to do this job.

Thanks for your replies. I have tried to wash it off and I think the clear coat has been removed in patches. I will have to notch this as a costly learning curve and do better next time. Thanks again.

I feel it would still be providing a great service to others that participate-in/read AGO articles,
if you would be kind enough to post the name of this foam spray-cleaner.

Thanks.

Curious to know as well.

On a side note: How are you Bob? Haven't spoken to you in a while!

Hi Roshan...

Been doing very well...Thanks for asking.
Hope all's well with you also.
Side Bar: I've been Jonesin' for more of your Videos. :props:

Now...
Either the OP's wheels in question have been exposed to some powerful cleaner(s) for awhile now
to cause this severe example of: Wheel-CC-'failure'...
Or the unidentified "foam spray", that's been used lately on these wheels...Is a real doozey!!

I definitely don't ever want any vehicle surfaces, or even myself,
to have contact with it...or any of its Cousins!

The brand is called 5 Stars. It's not something I've heard of and I think if you do, stay away. By the time I finished spraying the wheel and washed it off, the damage was done. Again thanks for the help. Now I have an excuse to get new wheels :)

Sidebar: Thanks, I can't wait to put a few more videos :) Been thinking about making a website myself actually...

Have you ever heard of 5-star Bob? Never heard of it myself.

OP, I try to never use a product that doesn't atleast have one review somewhere on the web... seems suspicious to me. :nomore:

At least you may get new wheels :props:
