Polish, Pre Wax Cleaner, Any Suggestions

I have a newer Mustang and the paint is in Excellent condition. It is garage kept and there are really no swirls or imperfections.

I am looking to do some paint maintenance though.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a product that I can use between clay and wax.

Should I use a polish or paint cleanser??

What's the difference between the two?

Any suggestions that won't break the bank?

I actually have a bottle of Meguir's Ultimate Polish in my basement. Would this be good to use or should I grab something else??

The lines are a little blurred here, but a paint cleanser is generally a non-abrasive polish that may have some chemical cleaners in it, as well as some oils or fillers. A polish would generally be something that has some abrasives in it, which would be capable of removing paint (and therefore some defects).

It sounds like you're going to be working by hand. The Ultimate Polish that you have will certainly serve the function of cleaning the paint. You could also use something like these:

Then wouldn't the Ultimate Polish be too abrasive?

Do I really want to remove paint on something with no imperfections?
 
IMO:
There's a really good chance for at least some light
"marring" to occur from the claying process.

Ultimate Polish is a very light abrasive polish,
and can be just the right product to remove
such marring, with little impact to the
overall thickness of the (CC)-paint.

Follow up with your favorite Wax or Sealant.

Ultimate Polish is horrible IMO. Its tough to buff off and after doing the hood of my Challenger I gave up with it. I'm now using NanoSkins Compolish and it does pretty good. Followed up with Finish Kares Poly Wipe Sealant 218 which has very mild cleaners to remove any polishing residue left from Compolish (which actually state no fillers or any oils).
 
From 1 Mustang dude to another...FUNX650 (Bob) is right. Once every 6 months I will do a very light polishing to my ride. As for the claying part I use a Nanoskin Blue and I have had no issues with marring as I lube the crap out of my claying process.

As for the products I use for the very light polishing I use Menzerna SF4500 or Polish Angel Final Polish. For even lighter polishing I use Polish Angel Escalate Lotion or Pinnacle Pre-cleaner.

I will use a Lake Country White Hybrid Polishing Pad and my Flex 3401 on speed setting 5. After that I use Menzerna Top Inspection for IPA wipe down and then have at it with a sealant and wax. Try that or I hope that helps.
 
Another suggestion is to use Poorboy's Pro Polish. It is a general purpose cleaner (use with more aggressive pads, on glass, etc) and does not leave any noticeable filling unlike many paint cleaners. It has a very easy wipe off.
