Years ago I was a professional auto detailer, and also a professional auto painter. I’ve done many color sands, lots of aggressive compounding, and lots of final finish polishing. But I have done none of those things for many years now. If I learned it way back when, then I’ve forgotten some of those key techniques; leading to the dilemma I have now. I’m using 3M “Finesse-It II” finishing material on my black Z06. I’ve compounded the entire car, and on the front fascia there are pits in the paint (from rocks and sand abrasion). After finishing up with Finesse-It II, those pitted areas are white with polish residue. I want to remove that “white” residue before I put on the glaze and wax coat. What’s the best way to do that? I’ve pressure washed the car, but the residue is still there. Should I use a chemical wax remover, or just a strong detergent?

Did you try mineral sprits or alcohol? Griots makes a paint cleaner (chemical) that is clear with no fillers and that might work. BTW welcome to AG (Detailers Asylum).

Thanks for the quick reply Rsurfer. I didn't think of using mineral spirits or alcohol but I’ll give them a try (in an inconspicuous place of course). When I started out I thought I would have to have some paint work done due to the pitting on the fascia, but the compounding took care of most of the imperfections. Those that remain… if I can lose the residue… won’t be that noticeable. If I learned one thing in the paint business it was; save the original paint if you can. As for “welcomes”, though I’ve been away from the business for many years, I have not lost my passion for it. Now though it’s just a hobby for me, and in this case, that hobby is a black Corvette. Thanks for the tip, and I’ll post the results.

Lots of black vette owners here. Love to see some pictures of your ride.

Glad to hear there are others with the "affliction". I surely will post pics once I get done with the detailing. I started the work with a Black and Decker Buff Master variable speed unit (wool, and then foam pads), and am finishing up with Porter-Cable 7424XP random orbital polisher (foam pads). After that, I’ll seal it all in with Pinnacle Series II wax.

Thanks 07 z-oh-6. Indeed, the Z06 is a nice car. Looking back, I'm not sure how I ever got along without it! Over the years I have had a number of cool cars; including a Torch Red 2004 Cobra Mustang. That was a fun car too, but nothing on the level of the Z06. Now I’m just trying to do it (the Vette) justice by making it as clean and brilliantly shiny as it can be.

If you have the funds and time, get Pinnacle Souveran. About 100 bucks. If you love to wax, you can do this every week or two. If you don't, Souveran will only last about 4-5 weeks. Best looiking nuba for black.

How ironic, I had a silver 2004 Cobra in '04. I had a ton of problems with it, though. Had the heads replaced, supercharger died, etc. Good to see you on AGO. :dblthumb2:

Welcome to AG, the best way to remove residue is by an IPA wipe down or some other type of solvent. I would not use Mineral spirits because it does contain so some oils. Nice to another Vette owner on here.

i would also like to welcome you to AG and yes i also own a Black Corvette
