Polishing a car that has been repainted

My brother bought a black honda civic a couple of years ago that has been repainted according to the original owner. I'm not sure why and my brother did not know enough to ask questions about it. I have no idea how well the paint job was done, if it's single stage paint, etc. I've seen poor paint jobs where the prep work has not been done, and the new paint just peels off, revealing the factory paint.

The paint on my brother's car has been neglected and there are swirl marks everywhere. I have a Griot's ROP and I'd like to see if I can restore the paint, but I'm afraid to make it worse. I plan on doing a test spot to see what the least aggressive product is I can use to get all or most of the swirl marks out. Other than that, is there anything else I should look out for when taking on this project?

My brother will be in town for Thanksgiving so I'll be sure to get pictures of his car then so I can share them.

Try a small test spot first. If the paint is single stage than the color of the car will start to appear on the pad you are using. As long as the prep work was done properly before painting the car and the paint has fully cured than you should have no problem correcting the paint surface using a DA Polisher. I would try the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover and the Finishing Glaze with the Lake Country CCS Smart Pads (Light Cutting & Polishing) for correcting the paint surface. Once the paint surface has been corrected than apply a thin coat of the Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant for your protection and shine.

Those are exactly the products I was planning on using. I'll try a test spot first and go from there. I'm hoping the prep work was done properly. I'll find out soon.
