I have a truck and explorer with the 3.5L ecoboost. For those not familiar, it's a direct injection engine. They get good gas mileage, and have great power, but they like to throw a little soot out the tailpipe. I'd like to clean the tips up really good but don't know if what I have on hand would be safe on something that could be exposed to higher temps. Anybody have any suggestions on what to use to clean them up, get them looking good, and keep the maintenance to a minimum after that?

I use Mother's Mag Wheel cleaner on my RX-8's aftermarket exhaust, and you talk about a hot exhaust! (Them rotary engines!)

My focus ST has a direct injection also. Yes the exhaust tips get dirty. I break up what I can with wheel cleaner and a brush. That will get them pretty good, and finish with P21S polishing soap.

I also used Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish on my exhaust tip. Brought it to a nice mirror finish that's lasted 6 months now and still looking good. I just buffed on and off with a cheap MF towel. I also applied 1 coat of Klasse AIO since at the time I was doing my spring detail and the bottle said it can be used on metals. I figured why not.

Thanks all!

The explorer needs some work. I have some mothers mag and aluminum polish. I'll see what that does for me.

The soot on mine washes off with regular car wash weekly...
If it ever tries to put up a fight some wd-40 and a terry towel...

On others cars (this weekends a 18month old 335 BM) the carbon was baked on the inner edge and rolled edge of the tips.. .. a little 3000 wet and dry removed it.. solvents weren't touching it...
