Polishing off old waxes/coatings

Hi all,

My "5 year" apex coating died a year and a half into its run, and ive been using various coatings and sealants ever since. I want to re-coat the car. The paint is in relatively good shape, with a few swirls / very light water spotting in places. My plan is to do a quick polish with Uno Pure and a rupes white pad. I want to get out the minor defects, gloss it up and remove all the old coatings. the condition of the paint doesn't warrant something more aggressive in my opinion.

The question i have is whether or not a quick polish with the Uno pure / white pad is enough to strip any coatings (including anything that may be left of the apex coating)

Get the DA fine and yellow polishing pad. Its still not that aggressive. DA fine works fast, just a few passes and it does some work.

The white pad and UNO pure are very mild products. Waste of effort IMO. For a light polish i would go with the yellow.

If im going with DA fine, i would probably use Sonax Perfect finish instead. (personal preference between the two)

I like Perfect Finish better too.

So many options. Using Pure and a rupes white pad probably would be fine to prep a panel too that had an old coating. But its more jeweling IMO.

My go to for that type of work and any other light polish on medium to soft hardness paint is a Rupes Yellow pad and Griots BOSS Perfecting Creme.
The yellow pad is pretty versatile and will finish down nicely. I'm not familiar with the Uno polish, but would be afraid a mild pad like the Rupes White might not have enough cut to remove the coating and knock out any other defects in the paint.

I doubt you will see any difference in gloss between the white and yellow rupes pads. But you can try it. I have a few times

Jason Rose stated in a video the yellow foam pad is their polishing/finishing pad for over 90% of cars. The white is more of a special case, that's what i took away from it anyhow. I also watched a video from the Rag Company with the old Rupes teams and the guy from Oberk/lake country. They joked that you can use DA fine and a yellow foam pad many many times without worrying about ruining normal paint - context they found all the fear mongering misplaced. That was how i took it. I have a camry now for instance i polished so many times i lost count haha

And perfect finish is still a finishing polish but just has some cut. That's why it's one of the best. With a course pad i've removed some rather severe defects with just perfect finish.

I might have to get that Uno pure anyway then. That black paint seems to love to Mar. cant seem to get it just right. Funny thing is, it takes compound and at least wool to have a meaningful correction of swirls.
